Marble of international renown
Laas marble: discover this “white marble” of the Vinschgau valley during tours, expeditions and gourmet events
White marble can be found on every corner in Laas/Lasa - even the paving stones under your feet are made from this exclusive natural stone: Laas marble is known as the world’s purest marble. Imposing monuments made from this fine crystal rock can be found all around the globe such as the Pallas Athene fountain outside the Vienna parliament, the Queen Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace and the New York “Ground Zero” underground station.
From the valley bottom, the marble quarries of the Jennwand massif are visible above Laas and Göflan/Covelano from 1,500 to 2,250m. The marble incline railway has been transporting tons of quarried marble into the valley since 1930: a technical miracle! Did you know that some of the milestones on the passing Roman road “Via Claudia Augusta” are made from Laas marble? You can discover exciting information about the past and present of marble mining in and around Laas with tours of the marble village, exhibitions in the mine shafts and gourmet treats at the “Marble & Apricots” Festival.
