Lush autumn

What makes autumn in South Tyrol so unique? The yellow larch trees, colourful Waalwege canal trails, busy squirrels and snow-white mountain peaks.

Nature serves up its richest treasures and we South Tyroleans do the same. Look forward to the Speciality Weeks and Gourmet Festivals with everything from lamb to Speck Alto Adige and from potatoes to chestnuts. The Indian summer lingers. Are you attracted to the outdoors by the clear air and pleasant temperatures, to go hiking and cycling? Or do you prefer to watch the cattle in their festive decoration being driven down from the Alpine pastures as part of the autumn cattle drive into the valley or the harvesting of the grapes and picking of the apples ?

Special moments in autumn

The hustle and bustle is over the pace of life slows down a little for the people of South Tyrol. The warm temperatures, magnificent colourful forests and clear air beckon outside.

5 reasons for an autumn holiday in South Tyrol

  1. There is no better time to enjoy the view of the mountains than autumn: peace returns and nature shows off its most colourful side at the Alpine huts and Mountain refuges.
  2. Ochre-yellow, fiery red, deep blue. Larch forests, vineyards, high-Alpine pastures. Nature invests its last energy in a bright array of colours. Your photos will never be more colourful.
  3. The people of South Tyrol have to complete a few things before winter arrives. Lively rituals fill the weeks in autumn: autumn cattle drives, the wine and apple harvest and the autumn markets and harvest festivals.
  4. We locals call that Törggelen  - our fifth season. Leisurely hikes and feasting at farm taverns are a must.
  5. South Tyroleans have close ties with nature and its treasures. Autumn is about cooking up a storm and Speciality Weeks attract gourmet fans to the beautiful old inns.

Gourmet indulgence in autumn

Stop off at a farm

During autumn, farmers invite visitors to their farmhouse taverns and serve the produce of their wine cellars and kitchens: sausages and smoked meats, sauerkraut and dumplings, Schlutzer and Krapfen, sweet treats and chestnuts. The best way to get to know the land and its people: by feasting!

Picture perfect landscapes

Gentle lighting, warm colours: autumn is an artist And for the South Tyroleans themselves, this is the best time for hiking. The climbs and trails are quieter and it’s more relaxed at the Alpine pastures and inns. Lace up your hiking boots and walk through the low mountain ranges, along the Chestnut and Wine Trails: the low sun makes the vines and chestnut trees shine bright. Treat your mountain bike to a tour through the forests of golden-yellow larch trees.

The first snows settle on the mountain tops, the craggy summits and ridges appear blurred before being bathed in glowing red by the setting sun. Summer has come to an end. Everything is beautiful.

All the colours of autumn

It’s the journey, not the destination. Whether you opt for gently weaving Waalwege canal trails, hikes in the southern vineyards or autumn indulgence through the ochre-yellow chestnut forests.
