Best places for a skiing holiday in South Tyrol

Tips to enjoy the wintertime to the fullest and have a memorable time in the snow

Winter in South Tyrol is filled with many incredible views and it's hard not to leave a piece of your heart on the whitewashed peaks during your skiing holiday in the Dolomites. The modern and efficient infrastructure elevate the ski resorts to a higher level and shuttle you to perfectly groomed slopes. Speed down the mountainsides on your skis, snowboardsled or leave your track when ice-skating.

A winter holiday in South Tyrol has a wealth of experiences and can give enough of what you're looking for. The vibrant cities and villages of South Tyrol are small hidden treasures and each boasts a unique historical and cultural heritage. By all accounts, they are particularly charming during the Advent season, when Christmas Markets are scattered across South Tyrol and Christmas traditions come back to life. During this special time of the year, South Tyrolean craftsmanship blends with mulled wine's aromas and  traditional treats like the apple strudel. Discover a selection of the best places for your skiing holiday in South Tyrol and keep in mind how comfortable it is to move around South Tyrol by public transport.

Skiing holiday at Kronplatz

Combining fun, relaxation, good food and tradition, this pearl of the Dolomites couldn't be a more perfect place for a skiing holiday. Set near Brunico, the Dolomites region Kronplatz is one of the largest and most modern ski resorts in South Tyrol. It boasts more than 120 km of snow-sure slopes, 31 modern ski lifts and a wide range of services that cater for all levels and types of winter enthusiasts: skiers, cross-country skiers, mountaineers, snowboarders or snowshoers. In the Kronplatz ski resort you'll find The Black Five, namely five black slopes for expert skiers, but also beginners' slopes. If you want to improve your skiing skiils, you can reach out to professionals at local ski schools who are prepared to offer the best ski experience.

Not only mountain sweeping views: at Plan de Corones you can visit the LUMENthe mountain photography museum and the MMM Corones, one of the museums of legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner. A few kilometers away, Val Badia, is absolutely worth a visit, unless you're not interested in a location that hosts international champions for the World Cup every year.

Skiing holiday in Val Gardena

Perhaps you've heard of it many times, but if you haven't you should come along! The Dolomites region Val Gardena is a renowned ski destination comprising the resorts of Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva Gardena which has won the "World Ski Awards" as "Italy's Best Ski Resort" several times and accounts for one of the 15 ski resorts that are part of the Dolomiti Superski, the world's largest ski circuit. This ski resort has 175 km of well-connected slopes available, with different levels of difficulty: hop in state-of-the-art ski lifts to whizz down the slopes of the Seceda or Alpe di Siusi mountains, join the events of the Ski World Cup and the Gardenissima, the longest giant slalom race in the world.

Val Gardena is also famed for its astounding views of the Sella group, the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto. You'll find here many marked trails winding through the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site and if you keep your ears open, you'll hear the oldest language of South Tyrol: Ladin. Val Gardena's inhabitants have their traditions at heart and celebrate what was passed down from generation to generation at the table or through sculpture and wood carving. Both the wood carvings of Val Gardena and the Ladin cuisine are widely appreciated. After training on the pistes, refill your energy with local dishes: don't forget to try the gnoch (potato gnocchi) and les turtres (fritters with spinach and ricotta filling)

Skiing holiday in Alta Badia

The Dolomites region Alta Badia is a stunning destination for a skiing holiday. The heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and member of the Dolomiti Superski ski area, offers over 130 skiable km, including the popular Gran Risa slope, hosting the World Cup with different winter disciplines to compete. There's a mouthwatering choice of snowparks here, well-equipped for snowboard and freestyle enthusiasts, cross-country and  snowshoeing trails through snow-covered landscapes and enchanted woods. Start one of the most spectacular ski tours in South Tyrol, the Sellaronda Arancione: 40 km around the Sella massif, a day tour that knits four passes together and connects the Ladin valleys of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Fassa and Arabba.

Much to your surprise, Alta Badia is not only about nature, sport and whitewashed landscapes. Here you'll try the traditional Ladin culture and dishes, passed down from generation to generation. During your skiing holiday in Alta Badia, don't miss out on top cultural or sports events, Christmas markets and local festivals. Have a taste for authenticity.

Skiing holiday in Schnalstal/Val Senales

In Schnalstal the season is soft and grippy for most of the season: lifts open as early as September and speeding down its groomed slopes is possible until late May. Due to the high altitude of the slopes, snow hardly melts and at whatever level you ski, the Val Senales ski resort offers slopes for every kinf of skier, may it be a beginner or an expert . The slopes in the Schnalstal Glacier ski area extend from the Grawand mountain station at 3,212 m above sea level while the chairlift mountain stations reach the Maso Corto valley station at over 2,000 m. Challenging descents, such as the Leo Gurschler ski slope or the 8-kilometre-long valley run along the smugglers' slope, have fascinated skiers in South Tyrol for decades. You can also opt for the Teufelsegg slope if want to enjoy a view over the peaks of the nearby Ötztal in Austria. And it's exaclty here near the border, that Ötzi, the Iceman, was found.

Skiing holiday in Gitschberg-Jochtal

This corner of the Dolomites is of undisputed beauty and a skiing holiday becomes an opportunity to recharge your mind and spirit. Immerse yourself in a unique place where adventure, nature and genuine hospitality are combined. The Gitschberg Jochtal ski area is a popular ski destination that can be enjoyed with all your senses. Enchanting landscapes, traditional dishes and a special care for yiour children. The Ski & Alpine Ski Area Gitschberg Jochtal is particularly loved by families: it has large beginners' areas and jam-packed with children's services. Head to some of the largest plateaus in Europe, the Alpe di Rodengo and Luson, which have easy-friendly trails to develop your basic skills and confidence.
