    Hotel of Paradiso ruin
    Martell/Martello, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

At 2,160m above sea level, in the middle of the national park, behind the reservoir at the end of the beautiful Val Martello, lies the fascinating red ruin of the former luxury hotel Paradiso.
(can only be viewed from outside).

The fomer luxury hotel Paradiso experienced only a short period of prosperity between its realization in 1936 and the outbreak of war in 1940, which ended the civilian hotel business. After the outbreak of the second world war the guest business came to a complete standstill.

Built 1933-1935 by the Italian star architect Gio Ponti. Temporarly occupied by the nazis as their own holiday hotel. Went bankrupt in 1946 and has been abandoned since 1955.

Since then, the hotel ruin have had a mystical attraction. In the middle of the national park the abandoned red building defies and offers a fascinating contrast to the beautiful natural landscape, the mountain waves and the Plima gorge.

    Beverages
    Whisky distillery PUNI
    Glurns/Glorenza, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

Good whisky takes time. The whisky is aged in underground bunkers from the Second World War. We are aiming for three variant qualities, because the maturation takes place in bourbon barrels from the U.S., Marsala barrels from Sicily and wine barrels from Alto Adige. Whisky fans around the world can look forward to tasting the PUNI fine single malts starting in 2015. They do not seek to be a copy of the Scottish original, but rather, wish to include the terroir of the Vinschgau Valley and Italy.

    Places to See
    Coppelle/ "Schalensteine"
    Latsch/Laces, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

No-one has yet been able to explain exactly the function or the reason why ancient man hollowed out identations in the rock face know as "Schalensteine", although thousand of pages have been written on this subject. In the Vinschgau and neighbouring valleys hundreds of "Schalensteine" can be seen. They vary in size from minute hollows to hollows the size of a human cranium. Some possibile theories of their use are that they were places of workship, guiding points for travellers or possibly that the hollowing out of the stone face was for ritualistic or medical purposes.

    Churches & Monasteries
    Church "St. Medardus"
    Latsch/Laces, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The church of St. Medardus, also called "Sommadorn" by the natives, was built over a prehistoric holy spring. This spring, which originally flowed underground from the altar through the nave, was damaged by tunnel work for the "Zufritt" reservoir in Val Martello, and in consequence the spring dried up. The apse covered with flagstones is remarkable, as are the romanesque tower with rounded arch frieze and rounded arch window. Over the side portal are remains of a romanesque crucifixion group from the 13th century.

    Cupule engravings
    Latsch/Laces, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

Cupule rock art decorations are nowadays found to be a worldwide spread phenomenon and just as mysterious as menhir standing stones. A varied selection of such cupules consisting in different sized cup-shaped engravings, hand carved by man on stone and rock surfaces, have also been discovered on the sun mounatin slopes between Castelbello and Coldrano and in Val Martello. They are arranged in either isolated or group settings, alongside paths and road tracks, streams and waterways and are often located on the most exposed rock outcroppings. Proven archaeological evidence establishes that the beginnings of cupule engravings date back to the neolithic (with some dating even as far back as the mesolithic) era. The bronze age too provides records of cupule rock art, up towards the end of the iron age, where the production of cupules then slowly fades away. Even though christianity is evidently well established by the time, this form of rock art is apparently picked up again towards the end of the early middle ages, with a second bout flourishing around the high middle ages.
