Crayfish are among the oldest creatures on earth. They were once widespread in European waters, but today these large freshwater invertebrates are an endangered species. In most cases, they are only found in natural refuge areas - isolated and hidden habitats. More than 600 species are known worldwide, but only a few in Europe. Crayfish can colonise almost any type of water. Due to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle, their role as predator and prey in the food web and their extensive nutritional biology, they are considered key species in the aquatic system. When present in high individual densities, they can have a significant impact on aquatic ecosystem life. Until the end of the 19th century, crayfish were abundant not only in this country, but also throughout Central Europe. Later, crayfish plague, water pollution and other alterations associated with human activity affected the native species. In this conference, Leopold Füreder presents the crayfish species of Central and Eastern Europe, their historical and current distribution and their danger. In the light of the latest research results, he discusses the ecological interactions and the fascinating lifestyle of the crayfish. He also presents the ‘South Tyrolean crayfish’ species conservation project, which was initiated some 25 years ago, as a successful measure to protect and sustain an endangered species, and concludes by discussing the current situation and possible future.

The Italian mountaineer Hervé shares his experiences, adventures, and deep passion for the mountains. Through his captivating storytelling, he takes you on a journey into the fascinating world of mountaineering. The presentation will be in Italian. Admission is free until capacity is reached. Hervé Barmasse grew up at the foot of the Matterhorn in a family with a long tradition of mountain guiding. Over the course of his career, he has established new routes in the Alps, notably on Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, and the Matterhorn. In 2011, he ascended Shisha Pangma (8,027 m) in alpine style, achieving a record-breaking time of 13 hours. More recently, he has focused on remarkable winter expeditions, including challenges on Nanga Parbat and Dhaulagiri.

We basically attribute a negative meaning to the term ‘prejudice’. This mechanism is actually due to the fact that our brain works according to a principle of economy: that is, it uses the elements of its past experience to approach the new with some element of appreciation. The problem arises when we fail to amalgamate past knowledge with absolute novelty. Psychology today has identified a whole series of biases, i.e. cognitive patterns of which we are often unconscious victims, that make prejudice something dangerous. Is it possible to escape this thinking mechanism and approach the new, free of any mental schemes? ‘There is war.’ This statement, which may sound so trivial in the face of almost constant warlike violence that it could be considered a tautology, or at least a platitude - isn't there always war? - perhaps it does offer a few insights: it could also be read to mean that war dominates our imagination to such an extent that we are barely able to imagine alternatives to it. War does indeed prevail and yet - or precisely because of this - it is important to explore what could be done and thought differently, and what is already happening.
