    On Saturday, 07 September: On this day, about 1000 sheep return from the mountain meadows to the valley. The successful return of the animals is celebrated by farmers and guests. Tasty, typical dishes such as "Schöpsernes" are served. Sunday, 08 September: The goats return from the mountain pastures to the valley on this day and their arrival is celebrated with delicacies such as "Kitzbratl" as well as lots of good humour at the festival site.

    Sheep herding in Maso Corto

    For centuries, each June shepherds have been driving their sheep from the Schnalstal Valley across the still snow-mantled saddles to graze in the pasturelands belonging to the farmers in Venter Valley in Austria. They return in mid September. About 1,500 sheep leave from the “Rofenberg-Alm“ in the early morning, reaching Hochjoch near the Bella Vista lodge (2845m) at about 11:30 a. m. The sheep arrive in Maso Corto between 3:00 p. m. The Bella Vista hut (2845 m) can be reached in about 1 hour on foot from the top station of the Roter Kofel chairlift (2543 m), follow the signs and trail number 3.

    The traditional cattle drive from the Oberdörfer and Brugger Alm alpine pasture will take place again on 8 September 2024. In the period from the beginning of September to the end of September, before it gets colder in the higher altitudes, the cattle drives take place in South Tyrol. The best dairy cows are lavishly and beautifully decorated with flowers in recognition of their performance. In the valley, the village community celebrates the arrival of the cattle and dairymen with a small feast of food and drink. Festivities in Burgeis from approx. 11.30 am ( may be subject to change) Arrival of the cows at approx. 13.00 in the upper village (in front of Bar Restaurant Gerda) Musical entertainment awaits you with the Amberg Duo!

    Daily between 10 a.m. -4 p.m. you can visit the mountain pine oil distillery on the Barbianer Alm on the hiking trail no. 15 along the Südtiroler Himmelstour/Cieloronda. Walking time from the mountain station Schwarzseespitze at the Rittner Horn approx. 1.5 hours. Language: German & Italian. You take the cable car Rittner Horn to the Schwarzseespitze. Fresh mountain air and a wonderful panorama await you there. The hike leads over the blooming alpine meadows to the Barbianer Alm. There is the rustic mountain pine oil distillery, where the owner Meinrad Rabensteiner gives an insight into the traditional production of mountain pine and pine oil. The organic product is produced in harmony with nature, fresh needles and twig tips of the mountain pine are collected in summer and processed in a gentle way.     The mountain pine not only grows in the Sarntal Valley, in the valley of the mountain pines, but also on the acidic silicate soils of the Villanderer Alm. The power of this mountain plant is enormous. The soothing and fragrant oil is suitable for relaxing baths, infusions and wraps or as an additive in scrubs. In the fragrance lamp, the scent helps to improve the room climate. On Mondays there is a show firing. This gives anyone interested an insight into how the mountain pine is processed into oil.
