All the updates to better plan your trip

Current situation regarding partial closures of the Reschenpass state road, the Lueg bridge on the Brenner/Brennero motorway (Austrian side), and the Puster Valley railway line between Franzensfeste/Fortezza and Bruneck/Brunico

Starting in the next few weeks, partial closures are planned for some major transport routes, which may affect your travels. If you have to drive on the Reschenpass state road, the Lueg bridge on the Austrian side of the Brenner motorway, or use the Puster Valley railway line between Franzensfeste and Bruneck, we suggest you follow the updates on this page.

The planned works are necessary to improve the safety and efficiency of the infrastructure, ensuring safer and more comfortable travel in the future. It is therefore essential to stay informed and plan your travels in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises. By investing a little time now, you can avoid future inconvenience, and support a safer and more reliable transport network for your next trips.

Reschenpass Road

Restricted traffic from September 2024 to December 2026

The Reschenpass state road (B180) will be temporarily closed from September 2024 until the end of 2026 to allow for the construction of a rockfall tunnel to improve the safety of the road. During the closure period, we recommend using the alternative route through Switzerland to avoid the affected sections. This route, which lengthens the standard route by just 6.6 km, follows the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185), and takes about 10 minutes longer than the usual route, depending on traffic. You can find a detailed map of the route (Pfunds – Nauders) on  Google Maps.

All you need to know about traffic disruptions at Passo Resia

The closure is necessary for the construction of a 400-metre-long rockfall tunnel to protect the road from falling rocks. These construction works are urgent due to the increasing frequency of landslides and extreme weather conditions.

From 8 October to 19 December 2024, continuous closure, day and night, including weekends.

Yes, we recommend using the alternative route through Switzerland during the closure periods to avoid the affected road sections. This alternative route, via the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185), takes about 10 minutes longer than the normal route, depending on traffic. You can find a detailed map of the route (Pfunds – Nauders) here: Google Maps

Motorhomes are not subject to any restrictions and may use the diversion route. Caravan combinations only if the trailer is no longer than 6.5 metres. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must pay a heavy goods vehicle charge in Switzerland. Anyone driving a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes on the diversions via Switzerland must stop at the Swiss customs office in Martina and pay 5 euros per journey and vehicle.

Yes, public buses, including the direct bus between Landeck and Mals/Malles Venosta, are running and being diverted  along the Engadin road (B184) and the Martinsbruck road (B185) during the closure periods. Up-to-date timetables and information on public transport can be found here: South Tyrol/Südtirol Mobility

Yes, during the winter season, from 20 December 2024 to 9 March 2025, the Reschen Pass will remain open in both directions.

  • From 10 March to 2 May 2025, traffic will be diverted again.
  • From 6 May 2025 until August/September 2026, traffic will be one-way with traffic lights.
  • From September to November 2026, there will be a final complete closure for the final works and asphalting.

  • Small lorries travelling between Vinschgau/Val Venosta and North Tyrol can use the Martina diversions without any restrictions.
  • For articulated lorries transporting goods regionally between Vinschgau and Austria, special time slots are provided for the use of the alternative route via Martina with specific authorisation: from 3:30 to 5:30 and from 19:00 to 22:00.
  • The local transport of goods between the Vinschgau and Austria via Switzerland is exempt from customs formalities, provided that accompanying documents or invoices are presented during controls.

Lueg bridge (Austrian side of Brenner)

From January 2025, the Lueg bridge will only be passable in one lane

In addition to the planned work starting in January, from 7 October there will be repairs to fix the damage to the Lueg Bridge and therefore single-lane traffic for 3-4 weeks.  From January 2025, traffic on the Lueg bridge will be temporarily limited to one lane in each direction in order to allow for major maintenance work to ensure optimal safety. During periods of heavy traffic, there will continue to be two lanes available (approx. 170 days a year — exact schedule to follow). Recent tests have shown that this solution is feasible and maintains a smooth and safe flow of traffic, minimising inconvenience for motorists.

Frequently asked questions about the Lueg bridge closure

The Lueg bridge is located on the A13 Brenner motorway on the Austrian side, south of Innsbruck.

The Lueg bridge was built around 55 years ago. The maintenance work is necessary to guarantee long-term safety, ensuring that it can continue to support traffic safely and efficiently along the A13 Brenner motorway.

Yes, the Lueg Bridge can either be bypassed by traveling via the Reschen Pass or by using the train network. The rail route over the Brenner Pass will not be affected during the renovation. You can find information about train connections here:

Additionally, night trains run from Innsbruck to Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Utrecht.

  • Single lane from 1 January.
  • Two lanes on around 170 days a year (170 days southbound / 160 days northbound). The precise dates are currently being worked out by ASFINAG.
  • Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must switch to the left-hand lane, as the load-bearing capacity of the bridge is higher there.
  • The test run in the summer showed that the traffic crossing system worked, i.e. diverting heavy goods transport to the left-hand side. Retaining two lanes on busy days meant a significant reduction in the expected hours of congestion in both directions.
  • According to experts, retaining two lanes more generally is not possible as it would massively shorten the service life of the bridge.

  • Control system to check the weight of vehicles in the right-hand lane. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes driving in the right-hand lane will be diverted before they pass the bridge
  • Additional lorry driving bans
  • Controlled speed section
  • New display boards
  • European information campaign by ASFINAG: with a focus on Austria, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands
