Current information about your train journeys in South Tyrol

Here you can find all the information about the planned closures along the railway line in Pustertal/Val Pusteria between Franzensfeste /Forte di Fortezza and Bruneck/Brunico and the railway line in Vinschgau/Val Venosta between Meran/Merano and Mals/Malles

From December 2024, closures are planned on some important railway lines that could affect your journeys. If you are travelling on the railway line in Pustertal/Val Pusteria between Franzensfeste/Forte di Fortezza and Bruneck/Brunico or with the Vinschger Bahn railway between Meran/Merano and Mals/Malles , we recommend that you follow the information on this page.

The planned work is necessary to make these infrastructures safer and more efficient and to make travelling more pleasant in the future. Important note: With the Südtirol Guest Pass you can use all rail replacement buses free of charge. Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway line

Replacement bus service between Brixen/Bressanone Franzensfeste/Forte di Fortezza and Bruneck/Brunico from December 2024 to December 2025 February 2026 

From 15 December 2024 to 13 December 2025, the rail line  between Franzensfeste/Forte di Fortezza and Bruneck/Brunico will be closed due to modernisation work.

During this time, the replacement bus service (B400) will run between Brixen/Bressanone and Bruneck/Brunico every 30 minutes.Passengers can only change from the Brennerbahn railway to the replacement service at Brixen/Bressanone station.
In addition, the railway line between Bruneck/Brunico and Innichen/San Candido will be closed from 14 April to 2 June 2025 . Here too, replacement buses will run between the two towns (line B500) every 30 minutes.
From 14 December 2025 to 26 January 2026 train services will not be running between Franzensfeste/Forte di Fortezza and Mühlbach  
All rail replacement buses can be used free of charge with the Südtirol Guest Pass . Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

Nützliche Informationen zur Sperrung der Pustertalbahn

The construction work on the Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway is necessary to increase safety and improve connections. The line will be directly connected to the Brenner railway, eliminating waiting times for train passengers.

Yes, during the closure of the Pustertal/Val Pusteria railway, a replacement bus service will be provided. All buses and rail replacement services can be used free of charge with the Südtirol Guest Pass .

From 15 December 2024 to 13 December 2025, the  B400 bus will run every 30 minutes between Bruneck/Brunico and Brixen/Bressanone in both directions. The journey takes  about   52 minutes.

The following bus stops will be served:

  • Brixen/Bressanone, Brixen/Bressanone railway station — bus platform A; 
  • Brixen/Bressanone, bus station - Bus platform B towards Bruneck/Brunico
  • Mühlbach, centre; 
  • Vintl/Vandoies, Vintl/Vandoies railway station — bus platform C towards Bruneck/Brunico; bus platform B towards Brixen/Bressanone; 
  • Kiens/Chienes, centre — bus platform A towards Bruneck; bus platform B towards Brixen; 
  • Ehrenburg junction; 
  • St. Lorenzen/San Lorenzo, St. Lorenzen/San Lorenzo railway station; 
  • Bruneck/Brunico, Bruneck/Brunico railway station — bus platform D

 

You can change from the Brennerbahn railway to the B400 replacement service  only at Brixen/Bressanone station. Franzensfeste/Forte di Fortezza railway station is not served by the rail replacement service. 

Buses on the  401 Brixen/Bressanone-Bruneck/Brunico line  can also be used. Rail tickets are also valid on these buses for the duration of the closure. 

The Bruneck/Brunico - Innichen/San Candido route will be closed from 14 April to 2 June 2025, with replacement buses on the B500 line running every 30 minutes. The exact timetables are yet to be announced.

Bicycle transport: It is not possible to take bicycles on the replacement buses. 

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the südtirolmobil website and the  südtirolmobil  app.

Yes, the Südtirol Guest Pass is also valid for all buses in the rail replacement service. Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

You can only change from the Brennerbahn railway at  Brixen/Bressanone railway station. The rail replacement buses depart from bus platform A at Brixen/Bressanone railway station.

Alternatively, you can also use the  regional buses on route 401  in the Brixen/Bressanone - Bruneck/Brunico section. These buses depart from bus platform B at Brixen/ Bressanone railway station.

Vinschger Bahn railway line

Rail replacement service on the Meran/Merano - Mals/Malles route from mid-February 2025

From 16 February 2025  to 25 October 2025 , the Vinschger Bahn railway  between Mals/Malles and Laas/Lasa  will be closed for modernisation work.  From 26 October 2025  until probably the end of March,  the  entire  section  between Meran/Merano and   Mals/Malles will also be closed The reasons for the closure are  the electrification works and the  testing and approval processes for both the new electrified railway line and the new rolling stock. A rail replacement service will be available, and the exact timetable will be published in good time. The rail replacement service can be used free of charge with the Südtirol Guest Pass . Validation at the station or on the bus is required.

Once the  work has been completed in early 2026 , the new Vinschger Bahn railway will offer considerable advantages for all travellers. There will be a direct connection from Mals/Malles to Bozen/Bolzano without changing trains, and trains will run every half hour. The new rolling stock is also more comfortable and can carry more than twice as many passengers, with around 800  seats and places to stand.

Nützliche Informationen zur Sperrung der Vinschger Bahnlinie

From 16 February 2025, the route between Mals/Malles and Laas/Lasa will be closed for approximately one year. From 26 October 2025 the closure will be extended over the entire route to Meran/Merano.

The exact duration of the closure has not yet been determined; it is expected to last from 26 October 2025 to the  end of March 2026.

Yes, a rail replacement service will be set up during the closure. The exact timetable for the replacement service will be published at a later date.

A valid train ticket is also valid for the rail replacement service. Tickets can also be purchased via the südtirolmobil websiteand the südtirolmobil app.

The closure is necessary in order to  complete the electrification works, dismantle the old train safety system and install the new system.  In addition , the new electrified railway line and the new rolling stock must be tested and approved.

After completion, there will be a direct connection from Mals/Malles to Bozen/Bolzano without changing trains in Meran/Merano. In addition, trains will run every half hour in future. The new rolling stock offers around 800  seats and places to stand instead of the previous 300.

The exact timetable for the rail replacement service will be published in good time before the closure begins.

Road traffic disruptions

To ensure a safer and more efficient road network, important work is being carried out on the Reschenpass/Passo Resia road and the Lueg bridge (on the Austrian side of the Brenner/Brennero motorway). During temporary road closures, traffic management plans will minimise any disruption.
