At Bad Ratzes, taking trail no. 1, we cross the Frötschbach stream and, following its course, we climb through the densely wooded Schlern gorge. This area is of scientific interest. In shady places we find groups of soporifics orchids (white-purple flowers), whose flower cycle is still unknown. Along the stream volcanic formations and Triassic deposits as well as alluvial deposits can be observed. The trail now climbs steeply, in many twists and turns, to the Schlernbödele hut (after about 1 hour and a half). From there we follow path no. 1 in a southerly direction through dense forest. At the second fork you come to the Touristensteig (the tourist trail) which you follow in a zigzag climb through the mountain pine belt up to the Schlernhaus (2,457 m). We recommend the 20-minute climb to the Pez with its summit cross (2,564 m).
