Additional information
The fourth stage of the 360° Obervinschgau circular hiking trail begins in Matsch, the first mountaineering village in South Tyrol, and leads downhill to Schluderns. After about half an hour, the castle ruins of Ober- and Untermatsch are reached on a narrow hill ridge above the Saldurbach stream. A natural stage with seating made of tree trunks, the so-called "Knottenkino", offers a magnificent panoramic view over the valley basin of the upper Vinschgau. Path no. 11 leads past the "Waaler Hütte" and to the starting point of the two well-known Waal paths: Berkwaal and Leitenwaal. Now follow the Leitenwaal to the archaeological site "Ganglegg", which dates back to the Bronze and Iron Age. A tour through this prehistoric and publicly accessible settlement site, is worthwhile. On the path nr. 18A and 19 you continue to the village of Schluderns. Above the village of 2,000 inhabitants towers the famous Churburg with the largest private armory in Europe. Equally worth seeing is the Vuseum, where, among other things, a large part of the excavation objects from Ganglegg are displayed.
