With the Seiser Alm Aerial Cableway and the Almbus n. 11 you reach our starting point – the bus station Saltria – and you follow road n. 9 south, along the Tirler terrain, past Hotel Floralpina and on to Hotel Tirler. Soon you reach a fork in the road. Here keep left, always following the signpost 9. A sign on the side of the road points to keep nearby sulphur springs. A detour there is worthwhile.
Your way now leads through dense forest, evenly uphill until you reach Zallinger Inn.
In the simple little church consecrated to the Immaculate Mother of God, during high season on Sundays and holidays, church services are often held. Zallinger is one of the oldest and most historically significant traditional inns of the Seiser Alm. The originally Ladin-Bavarian name was Sassegg until around 1860. That means the hill at the big Sas, at the Plattkofel.
Further following path n. 9, you arrive soon at the further junction. The sign 9 A points to Murmeltierhut in the immediate vicinity. The hut is situated away from the big tourist stream at one of the most beautiful spots of the Seiser Alm, namely at the food of the gigantic Plattkofel.
Following path n.9 walk steeply up to the Fassa saddle or to the Plattkofelhut. Here you are at the highest point of the Seiser Alm, the border of the municipalities Kastelruth and Campitello, as well as the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. The view of the Fassa Dolomites and the Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, is terrific and worth the long walk.
NB: For the return to Saltriawe recammend either the described ascent or the chairlift Floriandescending form the hut Wild O'Williams above the Zallinger. You can also take the hiking trail n. 7A over the wide pastures of the Stieralm. Saltner Hut and Radauer Hut, which are located along this path, offer refreshment.
