The oldest town in Tyrol between tradition and modernity

While strolling through Brixen, you embark on an exciting journey through time. In the city center, the baroque Cathedral of Brixen stands proudly, and just a few steps away, the Hofburg tells the story of Brixen's past as an ecclesiastical principality. Nestled between the Eisack and Rienz rivers awaits Stufels, the oldest district of Brixen. Yet it quickly becomes clear that this episcopal town skillfully blends its historical buildings with a contemporary way of life. Trendy cafes sit alongside traditional South Tyrolean inns, and numerous sports and cultural events bring the town to life.

Brixen is the heart of the Eisack Valley, a passage route between north and south for centuries. This is reflected in its alpine-Mediterranean cuisine and in Brixen's most iconic symbol: an elephant. In 1552, an elephant on its journey from Valladolid to Vienna, a gift for the emperor, made a stop in Brixen. This historic event is commemorated by a wall fresco on the facade of the Hotel Elephant.
