    St. Oswald Church
    Hafling/Avelengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The St. Oswald Church is situated on 2,365 metres in the hiking and skiing area of Meran 2000.

In 1641, the farmers of Hafling/Avelengo swore to edify Oswald as the patron saint of cattle and grazing, by building a chapel at the foot of the mount Ifinger and processing there on his name-day festival. The old chapel existed for almost 250 years at the original site, until a new building was erected in 1879.

Even today, there is a procession to the chapel every 5th of August, which is St. Oswald’s Day, with an open-air mass and a related church holiday. Many of the devoted from the surrounding area flock up to services at the little mountain church and pray for nice weather and good health for the cattle, for which Oswald serves as patron saint.

Mountain Station of the Merano 2000 Cable Car
    Hafling/Avelengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The former Ifinger cable car of the 1960s was replaced in 2010. Construction works lasted a mere ten months and ran between Naif (750 m), near Merano, and the ski resort Merano 2000, at 1960 m above sea level. Two cabins for 120 people now ascend to the mountain station in only six minutes. There the cable car technology, by the company Doppelmayr, is housed in a large cube, a recognizable landmark from afar with its red, light perforated exterior, which seems to sway over the white terraces of the reception area. Few materials are used here − steel, glass and light colored concrete − to create a transparent lightness which optimizes the views of the superb mountain landscape. The valley and mountain stations are multiple award-winning alternatives to the usual technology. They combine technology, functionality and design to create a timeless architectural structure.

    Forts & Castles
    Castle Payersberg
    Nals/Nalles, Meran/Merano and environs

High above Nals, on a rocky mountain ledge at the edge of the Sirmian river canyon, you find the ruins of Castle Payersberg. The castle was built during the first 30 years of the 13th Century by the Payr family, ministerial officers of the Counts of Eppan. The rectangular, four-storey high building had its entrance at the second floor. A staircase led to the third floor, which was used as living quarters. It had a four metre wide window and a fireplace with a drop-like mantle-piece that kept the room warm. From here, it was possible to enter the wooden military area, which protected the castle, through a wooden door. Towards the East, you will find the remains of a Late-Gothic castle chapel. The fortress was renovated in the 16th Century by the knight Jakob of Boymundt-Payersberg and also received new protective walls at that time. An entry towards the North was also added, together with a round tower. Above the entrance, they put the coat of arms of the Payersberg family with the year 1560. Back around 1600, when Marx Sittich of Wolkenstein described the area, he mentioned that the Payersberg was already in ruins and could no longer be inhabited. Most likely, it was the neglect of this building, which brought about the building of Castle Schwanburg in Nals, which was far more suitable for the owners to live in. Until the decline of the Courts of Payersberg in 1791, the castle stayed in their ownership. Today, the Malpaga family uses the building as their main residence, as well as a workplace for the adjacent farmhouse. In Obersirmian, just beside the Rainerhof farmhouse, which is the highest situated farmhouse found in the village of Nals, you will come across a tower-like building, which differs substantially from the surrounding farmhouses and presents itself more like a knight's fortress. This is the so-called Jagdturm (lit: hunting tower), which was used by the Counts of Payersberg during the hunting season and hot summers. The unique tower of Castle Payrsberg, which can be seen from afar and which is used as a landmark in the village, is part of the Nals village logo.

Castle Payersberg was renovated in 2024 and since then it offers a first-class location for unforgettable moments. The newly designed venue with its breathtaking views is ideal for a variety of occasions, like weddings, concerts, company celebrations, birthdays or conferences.

    Churches & Monasteries
    Church S. Ulrico at Plaus
    Plaus/Plaus, Meran/Merano and environs
The Church of St. Ulrich was mentioned in the archives as far back as 1164 and only its large Romanesque bell tower survived a devastating fire in 1400. The church was rebuilt in Gothic style
and consecrated in 1403. The two Baroque-era paintings by the famous Vinschgau Valley painter, Simon Ybertracher (1694 – 1772), are well worth seeing. The new Church of St. Monika was built next to the old St. Ulrich Parish Church, and is open to visitors during the day.
    Churches & Monasteries
    Dance of Death at Plaus
    Plaus/Plaus, Meran/Merano and environs

In the village centre the picturesque parish church is witness to a pious past. Its tower is typical of the Roman Age. The foundation of the parish, according to local lore, dates back to Charles the Great. The church is surrounded by modern artwork. In the graveyard, the Vinschgau artist Luis Stefan Stecher immortalised himself a few years ago in 18 paintings, the "Dance of the Dead" frescoes. The illustrations, of great artistic significance, depict the farming traditions and character of the region, and draw our attention to social outcasts and to our eternal accompaniment, Death.

    Natural Swimming Bath Gargazon
    Gargazon/Gargazzone, Meran/Merano and environs

Always being in touch with the latest trends, Gargazon inaugurated its new Natural Swimming Pool of Gargazon comprising 12,000 m² on May 29th, 2010. It is the first public bath in the Western part of the country that does without any chemical water treatment. Instead the natural water landscape is divided into a natural bathing area and an ecologically untouched regeneration zone that purifies the waters with the help of a number of beautiful plants.

The shower water is exclusively heated by solar collectors, yet another advantage of this ecological concept. The fact that the natural swimming pool is easily reachable on foot and by bike accords with the concept's principle of sustainability.

Children can splash in the naturally established brook, complete with wading pool, and there is an area for non-swimmers (max. depth: 1.20 m) which is accessible through a fine pebble beach. Not to mention, there is a grass play area with beach volleyball courts, table tennis, table soccer, loungers, umbrellas, picnic tables and wooden platforms that are ideal for playing, relaxing and having fun with the whole family.

St. John the Baptist Parish Church
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Documents mentioning St. John the Baptist Parish Church date back to 1164, although it existed long before (probably as a baptistery for the region), so it has already reached a venerable age. The Parish Church of Dorf Tirol/Tirolo is considered to be the oldest missionary church dedicated to St. John the Baptist in the area. The original Romanesque church (its tower is still preserved today) was eventually extended to include a Late Gothic choir.
One of the most interesting features of the church is the baptismal font of white Laas marble. The organ, with its large number of antique wooden and metal pipes is also a remarkable masterpiece from an artistic and historical point of view. The neo-Gothic high altar, bishop’s figures, statue of St. John above the baptismal font, oil paintings and crucifixion group are other works of art that are well worth seeing.
Among other things, Secco paintings from the year 1480 were brought to light by the renovation work on the Parish Church in 1969/70.
