Travelling in South Tyrol: no obstacles

South Tyrol welcomes everyone.

We believe that the beauty of the Dolomites, the scent of the forests and the thrill of reaching a peak should be shared experiences, open to all. Family holidays for disabled travellers, trips for elderly explorers, or adventures with a pushchair: South Tyrol offers state-of-the-art infrastructures and a network of facilities designed to remove all obstacles for a wide range of visitors. Disabled travellers and guests with limited mobility can therefore enjoy holidays in complete freedom, independence and safety.

For disabled people, organising summer holidays requires careful planning. The "Alto Adige per Tutti" Portal is a key point of reference to check the actual accessibility of hotels, restaurants, museums and trails. Each site is visited and assessed by experts according to objective criteria.

Holiday accommodation for disabled travellers: where to stay

Finding the ideal accommodation is the first step to a peaceful stay.

South Tyrol boasts a wide range of barrier-free facilities for a fully accessible holiday, from luxury hotels to farm stays, all strictly verified.

Many of the hotels in South Tyrol have eliminated architectural barriers both in the bedrooms and in the wellness areas and dining rooms. Alternatively, there are various independent accommodation options on offer, complete with ramps, compliant bathrooms and ample space to ensure maximum wheelchair manoeuvrability.

Mobility and barrier-free travel: getting around South Tyrol

The South Tyrolean public transport system is a paragon of excellence. Thanks to the fleet of modern vehicles, disabled travellers can explore the area with ease.

  • Trains: if you are travelling by train, you can request assistance at the Bolzano/Bozen station, but all major railway stations offer assistance with boarding and alighting. The service is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana through the Sala Blu office in Verona. A request must be made at least 24 hours before departure by contacting:

  • Email: salablu.verona@rfi.it

  • Toll-free number: 800 90 60 60 (active from 6:45 to 21:30)

In South Tyrol, most regional trains also use low-floor carriages, equipped with spaces suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The provincial stations are equipped with elevated platforms and lifts to facilitate access.

  • Buses: buses are also designed to accommodate people with limited mobility, offering dedicated ramps and spaces. Almost all city and suburban buses are equipped with access platforms or low floors.

  • Cable cars and gondolas: most modern cable cars are accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, allowing passengers to reach 2,000 metres in complete comfort.

Barrier-free hiking: mountain adventures for all

South Tyrol is open to everyone, not just experienced climbers. There is a dense network of barrier-free hikes to allow wheelchair users, elderly travellers with limited mobility, and families with prams to immerse themselves in nature.

Spaces such as the Seiser Alm, the Ritten/Renon Plateau and the area around Meran/Merano 2000 offer flat, paved or beaten earth paths, perfect for relaxing walks. The trails around the Lake Braies (specific sections), Karersee and Toblacher See lakes can be travelled without great difficulty, offering accessible postcard views. Additionally, the nature park visitor centres are modern and barrier-free, ideal for learning about the local flora and fauna through inclusive educational trails.

But a holiday in South Tyrol is about more than just sports and nature. Culture, food and wine are also within everyone's reach: from the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano (home of Ötzi) to the Messner Mountain Museum, the main cultural attractions offer lifts and easy access. What's more, in South Tyrol, enjoying a glass of Lagrein in a historic cellar or a plate of Canederli dumplings in a mountain hut are also accessible experiences. Many wine cellars have been renovated according to modern accessibility criteria.
