Holidays in the Dolomites Region Val Gardena

The heart of the Ladin valley beats for sport and wood carving

In the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage spend your holiday in South Tyrol in the face of the world-famous mountain massifs of the Odle Group, Cirspitzen, Sella and the unmistakable Sassolungo. Holidays in Val Gardena await you with unique experiences every day: whether by mountain bike through the Dolomites or admiring the mountain spring on the Seceda. In the Val Gardena region, you can do just about anything your heart desires - including a visit to the workshops of wood sculptors and wood carvers, which have a long tradition here.

Spring is just around the corner, but the mountains are still covered in snow

Spring is getting closer, but in the most alpine region of South Tyrol, the conditions for winter sports are still ideal. In Val Gardena, you can carve down the World Cup slope, marvel at the Dolomites along the Sellaronda, or experience the quiet beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site on a winter hike.
Tobogganing, horse-drawn sleigh rides and ice skating create fun-filled moments for families. Numerous ski huts – some with gourmet cuisine – invite you to relax and enjoy the sun on their terraces. Cross-country ski fans will find dreamlike trails around Monte Pana, Vallunga and the Alpe di Siusi for both classic and skating styles. Val Gardena is part of Dolomiti NordicSki with 1,300 km of daily groomed trails and free access for children up to 14 years. The villages in the area charm visitors with local shops, traditional crafts and homemade specialties – perfect for enjoying the winter-spring mix with all your senses.

Sustainable Val Gardena

Val Gardena, located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, with majestic peaks such as the Sella Group and the Sassolungo, is committed to a sustainable future. Awarded with the Sustainability Label South Tyrol, the region promotes innovative mobility and environmental protection projects. By 2026, a mobility center for car-free and barrier-free connections will be created, local and arrival transport will be optimized, traffic on the Dolomite pass roads will be reduced, cycle paths will be expanded, public transport will be improved, and the number of charging stations for electric vehicles will be doubled. Val Gardena, a renowned tourist destination, is thus making an important contribution to the entire region.

Tips for your stay in the Dolomites Region Val Gardena

Val Gardena is probably the most internationally recognised area of the Dolomites. Ski stars have been skiing down the World Cup Saslong piste here every year since 1970. Mountaineers and climbing pioneers from all over the world have been coming to the valley for even longer. From the villages at the foot of the Sella massif, Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, modern lifts take you up to the Dolomite massifs, to explore them on foot, by mountain bike, on a climbing rope or on skis. You can get very close to the mountain giants on an exploration tour over the Dolomite passes: the Sellajoch and the Grödnerjoch  can be reached on many routes. The views of the mountains here are beautiful everywhere - but the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Mastlé Terrace is exceptionally beautiful.

As you stroll through the villages, you will notice the special language spoken by the locals: Ladin. Preserving their own culture is important to the people of Val Gardena. For centuries, wood carving and wood sculpting have played a major role here. In the "Valley of the Lord God Carvers", there are still numerous artists today who you can look over their shoulders in their studios. At the Museum Gherdëina, you can immerse yourself in the culture and history of the Ladin Dolomite valley. The villages of the region await you with family-run shops, where local artisans and producers offer unique creations and homemade products.

Fish, corals and mussels once lived where the "Pale Mountains" now tower. Did you know that 270 million years ago, the Dolomites were still part of a tropical sea as reefs and atolls?

Produced in the Dolomites Region Val Gardena

Whether it's a piece of mild goat's cheese or artisan beer, many products are available directly from the farm, where you can sample the delicacies and get to know their producers.

People in the valley are particularly proud of the traditional art of wood carving. The people of Val Gardena were already interested in wood carving and wood sculpting in the 16th century. Not only to make something out of the abundant material wood, but also to secure the economic existence of the valley: exhibits were sold throughout Europe and even America in earlier centuries.

Are you interested in a hand-carved articulated doll? Or a larger-than-life wooden sculpture? With a bit of luck, you can watch the master craftsmen and women at work in their studios.

Ladin cuisine

One thing is certain: in the Ladin valleys, no hungry stomach is left wanting! In the kitchens in the Dolomite regions Gröden, Alta Badia and Kronplatz , bread is still baking, smelling and steaming just like in grandma's day. You will notice it straight away: After a long walk or a quick bike ride, the soup made from vegetables, barley and meat tastes particularly good! But there are many other Ladin delicacies waiting for you: "Bales" (dumplings), "Gnoch" (potato dumplings) or "Turtres" ("Tirtlan",  pastry sheets filled with spinach and curd cheese and deep-fried), "Grestl" (Gröstl, pan-fried dish with boiled potatoes and beef cut into pieces) or "Fortaies" (baked yeast dough). The "Jufa", a milk pudding dish, is not only an exciting experience in terms of flavour, as it is traditionally eaten directly from the pot with a spoon. Meal time!
