Tips for you stay in Val Gardena

The most internationally renowned skiing area in the Dolomites, Val Gardena has much more to offer than the World Cup events: like the Gardenissima, the world's longest giant slalom that attracts hundreds of passionate skiers every year in March to compete on the 6 km long downhill.  What would you choose between the quiet of nature and the hustle and bustle of ski resorts? Few yards away from the ski runs, at the foot of the Sellastock, Langkofel and Plattkofel mountains, modern cable cars can shuttle you up to the Dolomite massifs. Explore them while hiking, climbing, on your skis or mountain bike. Everywhere you lay your eyes on, there are stunning views of the mountains. They are exceptionally memorable at the Mastlé viewpoint in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. What's more? "The Legendary 8", the torchlight hikes and the zip line are all considered among the top experiences in Val Gardena.

Roaming through the villages, you’ll hear South Tyrol's oldest language: Ladin. Locals in Val Gardena have their culture at heart. Not by chance, wood carving and sculpture have played prominent roles for centuries. In what is known as the "Valley of the Wood Carvers", there are still many artists who can be observed in their studios. While visiting the Museum Gherdëina, deep-dive into the culture and history of this Ladin valley in the midst of the Dolomites. The villages of the region await you with family-run shops, where local artisans and producers offer unique creations and homemade products.

The Ladin cuisine

There's only one certainty in life: in the Ladin valleys, you'll never stay on an empty stomach. In the kitchens of Val Gardena, Alta Badia and Kronplatz, there's always a pot on the stove and mouth-watering smells that remind of grandmothers. A traditional dish called "Panicia" is a barley soup with vegetables and meat served with slight variants across South Tyrol. But the Ladin cuisine offers far more delicacies: the local dumplings "Bales" , potato dumplings "Gnoch" and fritters filled with spinach and ricotta cheese "Turtres". You can also try a popular dish known as "Grestl", roasted potatoes and veal cut into pieces or "Fortaies", spiral fried pancakes. Besides tasting delicious, the "Jufa", a kind of milk pudding that is traditionally eaten in a pot and with a spoon, is likewise an authentic experience.
