Bolzano/Bozen, the town of winegrowing

A good drop of Lagrein or St. Magdalener? That’s Bolzano in a wine glass

Bolzano and the vineyards belong together: grapes have thrived in the Bolzano/Bozen valley basin since primeval times thanks to the optimal conditions for producing this exquisite wine. On the gravel soils of the Eisack, Etsch and Talfer rivers, which meet in the capital, the indigenous velvety Lagrein thrives particularly well. And on the sunny slopes of St. Magdalena, Justina and Leitach, the delicately fruity St. Magdalener flourishes. The saying “Venice swims on water, Bolzano swims on wine” may seem strange at first. However Bolzano is more than just one of South Tyrol’s largest winegrowing communities and part of the Alto Adige Wine Road; it is also one of Europe’s biggest wine-producing towns. Each March, South Tyrol’s wine scene gather at the Schloss Maretsch castle for the Bolzano Wine Tasting. Bolzano’s wine culture can be experienced at the many wineries and vineyards and the newly designed Cantina Bolzano winery is a must for architecture fans.

Bolzano/Bozen Christmas market

It's the oldest and largest Christmas market in the region. With more than 70 stands laying out handcrafted products and local foods, a varied program with shows and concerts, the festively decorated Christmas tree and the joy-filled eyes of children, the old center of Bolzano becomes a fairytale during Advent.

Bozen

What can I see and do in Alto Adige Wine Road region?

The Alto Adige Wine road winds through a gentle hilly landscape of 15 villages and the wine town of Bolzano/Bozen, past castles and fortresses, wine estates and historic manor houses, up to the provincial border with the historically significant Haderburg.

Only 25 kilometres south of the provincial capital Bolzano lies Neumarkt/Egna - one of Italy's most beautiful villages and the finest growing area for Blauburgunder. Here you stroll along cobbled streets while shopping, through medieval arcades, past serene courtyards and Venetian-style buildings. The Museum of Everyday Culture offers a sensitive insight into life in days gone by.

On the other side of the Etsch valley, where apples and wine thrive on its fertile banks, rises the wine village Tramin — namesake and home of the Gewürztraminer. The “Hoamet Tramin” museum tells the story of the village’s origins.

Special wine experiences await you with the WineAdvent behind the 24 doors of the exclusive Alto Adige Wine Road Advent-calendar. On the Winter Wine Safari on 13 December you have the chance to discover various wineries, experience the festive Christmas atmosphere there and taste their noble wines. Professionally guided, perfectly paired gastronomically and rich in experience. An unforgettable wine-culture adventure!

Christmas time on the Alto Adige Wine Road

Follow the scent of freshly baked Zelten, a traditional fruitcake, and apple strudel, marvel at traditional South Tyrolean handicraft products and handmade Christmas tree decorations at the market stalls, or warm up your body and soul with a mug of hot mulled wine or fruity punch. The Christmas markets on the Wine Road are a particularly good place to enjoy the pre-Christmas period: it is the perfect way to get in the mood for the festive season.
