    Alpine vegetation
Sand in Taufers/Campo Tures, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
Ascending the mountain, the hike leads you to the so-calles Schlafhäuser (sleeping houses), which the farmers used as shelters and for cooking when the hay was harvested. The route continues high above the Reintal Valley, crossing the southern slopes of the Mossstock peak. Dwarf shrub heathland, marvellous pines and characteristic highland moors can be found along the way. Blooming alpine flowers invite you to take a rest and to marvel at the stunning views, reaching from the close glaciers of the Rieserferner mountain range to the Dolomites in the distance.

    Mountain pasture landscape
    Ahrntal/Valle Aurina, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
Beginning the walk in the cultivated land in the valley, we cross into typical high alpine larch forests. The forest is of great importance since it protects the valley from avalanches and falling rocks - but it can only fulfill this role if the flora and fauna are kept in a harmonious relationship. Above the woods, we find alpine cabins - witnesses of past labours. Over the years, farmers have shaped the landscape and kept in balanced.

    Mining Museum in the Granary
    Ahrntal/Valle Aurina, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

Copper was once mined in the Aurina/Ahrntal Valley, and even today the tunnels can be visited and are used for the medicinal purpose of relieving asthma. The granary next to the church in Steinhaus has long served for the storage of food, with which the miners were partially remunerated. In 2000, it was rebuilt into a museum in order to exhibit the Enzenberg Collection comprising wood models, paintings, mine maps, documents and finds from the mines at Predoi/Prettau. In addition to a pavilion as foyer, which is made of a steel structure with stone slabs and connected with the exhibition rooms through a glass atrium, the renovation operation focused mainly on the central section of the elongated building structure. A wooden staircase, lift access, emergency stairs, and sanitary facilities were also installed here. The encased staircase represents a type of watershed between everyday life and the world of the museum.

    Hiking
    To a high plateau
Sand in Taufers/Campo Tures, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
Our walk starts in Mühlen in Taufers/Molini di Tures at the church where we go south to "Schattenbergstraße" road, which leads us to a sloping path up the "Schattenberg" to the first mountain famrs. After the 2nd sharp bend, we find the first signpost pointing towards the High platform and here we turn off to our left. The path leads relatively steeply upward; it is a narrow forest path. After about half an hour walk through the spruce forest, we reach the plateau which gives a stunning view of Taufers' valley basin.

    Kasern Information Center
    Prettau/Predoi, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

The information center for hikers who wish to begin from the start of the Riesenferner Ahrn Natural Park, is situated at the point where the road ends in the Ahrn Valley. The glass rear wall allows hikers to decide their goal from this point, as though on a huge T.V. screen. The ground floor, flat roofed building is built entirely of plain wood: vertical wooden slats cover the exterior and on the inside well placed windows and doors as well as a wooden counter dominate the room, which then leads down three steps to the panoramic window, flanked by floor to ceiling photographs of the glacial area. The lower floor is a light exposed concrete room in which black display cases contain information about the history of building in the mountains in the Ahrn Valley. A pleasant, simple building.

    Old Parsonage in Prettau
    Prettau/Predoi, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

The parsonage was built contemporaneously with the late Gothic church in Prettau and was subsequently operated as a farm, with stable and barn. It was to undergo a conversion into a private house. Special sensitivity was required in the conversion due to the restrictions related to it being a heritage-listed building. The architects managed to clearly identify the historical building’s structure yet simultaneously reflect our contemporary era through the spare use of modern details. This is especially true for the newly timbered barn: it was elegantly redesigned for residential purposes, with an open fireplace, skylights and untreated wood floors, it yet retained its old atmosphere despite this repurposing. In the old building both the stairs and the brick arches in the cellar were conserved, as was the sooty former Selchkuchl (smokehouse), which took on a new function as a work space.

    On historic paths
    Prettau/Predoi, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
Once many different lines of peaople walked over the "Krimmler Tauern" - hunters, farmers, seamstress, smufflers, soldiers and the path markers themselves. The Tauern crossing into "Salzburgerische" (in Austria) have a tradition that goes back thousands of years. The historical importance of the route is also confirmed by the ancient "Hl. Geist" church. Furthermore the area is interessting beacause of its flora and fauna.

    Panorama
    Gais, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
Following a long ridge between Wielental and Tesselberg you climb through thick, almost untouched, forest. The ecology aspect of a healthy forest ground covered with mosses, lichens and mushrooms provides for topics of conversation. The viewing points offer a wide panorama: you can see from the huts of the Wielental and Mühlbacher tal valley over the nearby three thousand metre peaks of the Rieserferner Mountains as well as the distant Hohen Tauern, the Zillertal Alps and the Ötztal Alps. To the South lies the unusual world of the Dolomites, which stimulates conversations about the development of their diverse geological formations.

The goal of the hike are the "Koflerseen" lakes. You pass through varied parts of the forest and mountain pastures. Over canturies people have shaped the landscape and cultivated the land which is still wellmaintaines. The lake themselves are embedded in a mountainous region bounded by the boulders and debris left by the retreat of an old glacier. Around the banks of the lakes there are meadows covered by vast variety of flowers spreading in all directions. These flowers show the art of survival in high mountains. Last, but not least, the hike offers views of glacial peaks of the Rieserferner Mountains.

The miners path into the Röttal
    Prettau/Predoi, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina
As we walk along the "Knappensteig" path, passing by entrance to old mine galleries, we take a journey into the past and time when the extraction of ore was just beginning. Above the tree line, we feast upon a richly diverse mountainous world - in one of the country's most beatiful high valleys. The widespread distribution of the alpine cabins demonstrates the cultural imprint of people over centuries. The interesting remnants of glaciers can be seen in the form of old moraines at the Rötalm hut - and "Merbalm".

    Cascade Pool
Sand in Taufers/Campo Tures, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

A few minutes on foot from Sand in Taufers, near the Ahr, the Rein Valley waterfalls and a naturally formed swimming pool, stands a sports center, which is recognizable by the building's elongated, lightly curved roof. The interlocking of exterior and interior space defines the design. Light shines in from all sides through the glass panelling of the building, providing views of the surrounding area and of the outdoor pool which blends into the landscape. The terraces of the pool are reminiscent of the waterfalls. The interior rooms form a walkway between the areas and provide the required fixed points in the building that simultaneously offer stability next to the seemingly freely swaying roof. Few materials were used in the design: stainless steel basins, rough concrete for the walls, non-slip stone for the flooring, light acoustic ceilings, and the steel and glass facades which are very light in appearance.

    Prettau Kindergarten and Library
    Prettau/Predoi, Ahrntal/Valle Aurina

A new structure for a kindergarten, library and cafeteria was built to replace the dilapidated kindergarten. The compact, plastered masonry fits in with the character of a small village in terms of scale, volumes, roof shape and materials used. Deep recesses and an array of window shapes, with offsetting, show that good modern architecture can be created out of conservative structures. Box windows in various sizes illuminate the interiors. In the kindergarten area, the windows are designed in such a way that their deep embrasures can be used by children as benches to relax and play inside the building. This architecture is convincing in its simplicity, with carefully considered modern details.
