The Talvera river runs through the city of Bolzano. The water course originates from the Sarentino Valley and its banks are home to beautiful green lawns, recreational parks, long walks and modern cycle routes. This is the green lung of the city and a popular destination for both tourists and local residents that provide rest and relaxation to those strolling along the tree-lines paths as well as fun for the younger ones in the playgrounds. There are also many sport facilities in the area which attract football, baseball and softball lovers.

Start is in San Genesio, up to the highplateau Salten till the parking area "Schermoss". Follow the trail nr. 6, pass the mountain restaurant "Gschnofer Stall" and turn back to San Genesio, by following trail nr. E5. 

Along the way there are 12 stations, which were designed by the pupils of the local primary school. There are lots of small master pieces which were smoothly integrated into the landscape of the Salten high plateau. Each station tells you about a local fairy tale from the area of San Genesio. The stories and fairy tales about witches and similar legendary creatures have always excited the fantasy of children and adults alike. Examples of the many exciting stories are the explanation why the Castle Greifenstein is always called ”Sauerschloss“, the fairy tale of the sunken city, the endless ball of threads, the butter witch of Afing, how the Castle of Greifenstein got its name, the captured mermaid, and many more. The Castle trail „Castelronda“ is about 20 km long and connects the castles and ruins of Bolzano, San Genesio and Terlano: Castle Roncolo/Runkelstein, Castle Rafenstein, Castle Grifo/Greifenstein (vulg. also called Castello del Porco, which means „Pork Castle“), Ruin Helfenberg and Castle Neuhaus (also called Maultasch). The efforts of hikers will be fully satisfied with magnificent views over the most beautiful castles and ruins of the region, in the middle of the nature.

The trail starts at the Castle Roncolo/Runkelstein in Bolzano/Bozen and leads to the Castle Runkelstein passing the San Genesio cable car valley station. Then you continue to Restaurant Noafer in Cologna/Glaning (a hamlet in the municipality of San Genesio), situated above the Castle ruin Grifo/Greifenstein. Next, you reach the Helfenberg castle ruin and at the same time you can enjoy the marvellous panorama of the surrounding area. The descent towards Terlano/Terlan leads you to the final castle ruin Neuhaus/Maultasch and here ends the trail „Castelronda“. 

You can choose to start in Bolzano, San Genesio or in Terlano and you can also hike partial sections at your discretion.

The hikes on the „Castelronda/Burgenweg“ trail are especialliy recommended in spring, autumn and winter.

After Ponte Talvera / Talferbrücke, run along the promenade called "Lungo Talvera San Quirino and cross the yellow pedestrian bridge; after a while cross Ponte Loreto and reach the southern bank of the river; walk along the Isarco / Eisack river to the wooden bridge and cross it; continue along the "Passeggiata Lungo Isarco" and pass under Ponte Roma / Rombrücke; run along the beautiful, partly tree-lined meadows until just before Ponte Palermo Brücke. Go back towards Ponte Roma, pass in front of the Lido Swimmingpool and the Druso Stadium and return to the starting point.

Walk along trail no. 1 or the E5 European long-distance walking trail trough the hilly landscape offered by the Salten, to then reach the little church of St. Jacob and Langfenn. History consists mostly of rock. At the Larcherhof in Bolzano-Rencio, for instance, the wines age in large wooden barrels in a cellar that dates back centuries. But even more impressive are the powerful Lagrein grapevines of the Larcherhof which themselves are more than a hundred years old. As can been seen with them, history lives.

The vineyards of the Larcherhof in Bolzano-Rencio belong to the classic Santa Maddalena cultivation zone which is distinguished by a mild, nearly Mediterranean climate, by hot days and cool nights at the time of maturation, and by warm porphyry soils and loose alluvial soils. The Spögler family has five hectares of grape growing area here. “We manage our vineyards in an environmentally-friendly way that is close to nature, without herbicides or insecticides,” explains Hans Jochen Spögler.

The vineyards are planted with Merlot, Schiava, and Pinot Grigio. And above all with Lagrein, which is to be understood as such a typical variety for Alto Adige. From the vineyards of the Larcherhof in Bolzano-Rencio, it is made into wines of different forms: Lagrein, Lagrein Kretzer rosé, Lagrein Riserva. The winegrowing tradition of the Spögler family, which runs the Larcherhof, dates back to 1893. But only since 2008 have they been making and bottling their own wines. In the meantime, production has risen to 45,000 bottles per year, a figure that will continue to grow further in coming years.

ROUTE After crossing the Talvera river, run along the Lungo Talvera Gries, past the numerous playgrounds and sports facilities, cross Ponte Sant'Antonio and reach the start of the Promenade Sant'Osvaldo; a few serpentines quickly take you to higher altitudes, offering enchanting panoramic views of the city and the mountains around Bolzano; the spectacular route winds its way between rocks, gentle slopes and stretches of woodland. After 3.8 km, turn around at Hotel Eberle, return to town along the same route and return to the starting point along the Talvera Promenade.

Starting in Trodena/Truden we take the European long distance path E5. We walk through a wonderful mixed coniferous forest on a forestry trail and we get to the col "Ziss-Sattel". The trail continues to the  "Hornalm" on 1.710 m. The panoramic view from here is surely worth the tiring climb: You have a wonderful view over the mountain chain "Lagoraikette", the Palagruppe, the two mountains Schwarzhorn and Weißhorn, the Latemar, the Rosengarten group, the Schlern and the Alps of the Stubaital and Ötztal. After a stop for a bite to eat, we take the path E5 back to Trodena. The Alp is open in Winter from Tuesday to Sunday.

Above the village of Jenesien, next to the sports ground, there is a large car park with charge. From here you start on foot in the direction of Gasthaus Edelweiß and continue on trail no. 1 over the larch meadows of the altopiano del salto to the Schermoos car park (approx. 5 km). From Schermoos take paths nos. 5 and 8A, go up the road past the driver's yards and to the Lanzenschuster inn. 

We start on the top of  village and follow for 300 m nr.3. Then we choose nr. 1 and arrive during the large street with good hiking shoes the Cislon Alp (1250m). During the winter it's open from Thursday to Sunday! Then we follow the nr. 2 till a sharp right hand bend (Hochwand) and leave the nr.2. We follow the street till the "Jägerkreuz" and turn down back to the point where we started. Attention: after the Cislon Alp you should have snow shoes for the trip!

The Mumelter family has been living at the Griesbauerhof in Santa Maddalena above Bolzano since 1785, so the estate winery is now being run by its seventh generation. It is represented by Lukas Mumelter, who took over his parent’s estate in 2018 – with the best preparation.

Lukas laid his professional foundation with the study of winegrowing and oenology in Geisenheim, Germany, after which he gathered practical experience: in Tuscany, Piemonte, and New Zealand. All of this has now flowed together in the vineyards and the winery of the Griesbauerhof, starting with a professional evaluation of the location and soils: “The airy location and the sandy loam soils of a porphyry origin characterize our wines,” Mumelter explains, “with both the alluvial soils at the south of Bolzano and the moraine soils in Appiano.”

These soils, the locations he described, and the diligence with work in the vineyards all come together in the harvest of Cabernet, Merlot, Lagrein, Schiava, and Pinot Grigio, which he turns into fruity, velvety, authentic wines. These can be tasted at the farmhouse inn “Freiraum mumi” which is run by Lukas’ brother Michael and which is supplied by their mother Margareth Mumelter with homegrown tomatoes – some thirty different varieties.

But even with all that variety, the main attention of the Griesbauerhof still goes to tradition. Thus Lukas Mumelter indicates the goal of his work: “To make great wines from the indigenous varieties of Schiava and Lagrein.” So even if he feels at home anywhere in the world, his roots will always be in Bolzano.

The Pitsch am Bach Estate Winery in Bolzano lies between Santa Giustina and Santa Maddalena, and therefore right where the Santa Maddalena wine originated. And apropos of origins: the farmhouse itself dates back to the fourteenth century, and its first owner was neither a farmer nor the clergy, and not even someone from South Tyrol.

The farm was first mentioned in a document from 1350, and specifically as the property of a banker from Florence named Boccia. Over the course of the centuries, the Italian name that was unusual for South Tyrolean tongues was gradually adapted to the local language usage until “Boccia” turned into “Pitsch”.

Today, Paul Schweigkofler and his family are now the eighth generation to run the Pitsch am Bach Estate Winery. The 3.4 hectares of vineyards lie on slopes with a southwestern exposure at an elevation of around 300 meters on dry alluvial gravel deposits with a high degree of sand and a medium humus content. The best conditions above all else for Lagrein and Schiava from which – it goes without saying! – a classic Santa Maddalena is also made at Pitsch am Bach. In addition to that, Gewürztraminer and Yellow Muscat are also grown.

“We take care of our vines as naturally as possible and with the vinification, as well, we pay attention to traditional techniques,” Schweigkofler adds. So it can be seen that the long history of the farmhouse, the family tradition, and the Santa Maddalena background have all deeply left their mark at Pitsch am Bach in Bolzano. And they reach all the way into the daily work.

Strong vineyards and wines in which the terroir identity can be tasted: that is what distinguishes the Malojer Gummerhof Winery. It lies in the rural northern part of Bolzano and can look back on a long history. For five generations, the focus has consistently been on quality and identity.

When Bolzano was still small and manageable, the Gummerhof was located right in the middle of a landscape of vineyards, fields, and meadows. That was in 1480, when the farm was mentioned for the first time in a document. Precisely four hundred years later, Joseph Trafojer purchased the winegrowing farmhouse and step by step converted it into a winery and distillery. When his granddaughter, who had married into the Malojer family, took over the operation in the late 1940s, the name of the operating family may have changed, but the recipe for success stayed the same.

This was built upon two pillars. One of them is the rigorous policy of quality that has been followed for decades, while the other is the terroir identity that it should be possible to taste in Gummerhof wines. The result is a broad palette of wines with strong character: Cabernet, Merlot, Lagrein, Pinot Noir, Schiava, Müller Thurgau, Sylvaner, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc.

Depending upon the variety, the wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, in small oak casks, or in the old large oak barrels that are handed down from generation to generation. Each of them imparts a character to the wines that is unmistakable – as it should be. That is also what Urban Malojer, winemaker of the family winery, says. “Our goal is to constantly be improving our wines and to make them more and more typical.”

OK, we’ll admit it: if someone reads the name of the Vinzig Estate Winery in Bolzano-Cologna, then a German-speaker will immediately begin thinking of a play on words. For example, the name also sounds like a word for “tiny.” But there is nothing tiny about their product line. Let’s just stick with the fact that the sunny slopes above what is today the Guncina Promenade in Bolzano was already called as early as 1333 the “vineyard of paradise”.

And that is precisely the location of the Vinzig Estate Winery of Stefan Veit, who knows to appreciate this privilege. “We live and work in a location that can demonstrate a centuries-long tradition of winegrowing,” says Veit, emphasizing that his estate already appeared for the first time in documents from the thirteenth century. “As a part of this rich history, we want to bring the enthusiasm for wine into today,” says Veit.

This “today” distinguishes itself with no fewer than nine different wines that are created under the Vinzig brand. As single varietal wines, these include a Yellow Muscat, a Lagrein, and a collection of Schiavas: one matured in stainless steel tanks, one in glass carboys, one in small oak casks, and one in large oak barrels (the latter, tellingly enough, carries the name “Paradis”).

Vinzig also has a rosé in their assortment. It is a blend of Vernatsch, Lagrein, and Red Muscat. Like all of the other wines, the rosé at Vinzig is only coarsely filtered before it is bottled. That also holds true for the other cuvées in the product line: a red made from Lagrein, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a white with Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc. It seems that there are a lot of choices in paradise.

From the hiking starting point in Truden  (visit center Nature parc) you hike up through the village towards the village entrance. From there, follow trail no.5, then Sagenweg (no.8) to the picturesque Rungganöhof, continue there, always following trail 5. You will pass the Pinterschupfe, Peraschupf and Riegenschupfe (all not managed) to the Langes Moos biotope . From here via path No. 9 you arrive to the Krabes Alm (1,540 m, managed during summer). From there follow path no. 6 and then 5 directly to the hiking starting point in Altrei. It's possible return from this point to Truden with the pubblic transport.

The trail starts in San Genesio and goes on above the Salto, until the parking space Schermoos and the mountain hut Lanzenschuster. Just follow the trail n° 5 to the Jenesiener Jöchl and n° 23 till the Men of Stone. 

The Radoin 1560 winery is situated between the deep canyon of the Bletterbach, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and the enchanting Trudner Horn Nature Park in Radein in the south of South Tyrol. Of course, the conditions for growing grapes at 1560 metres above sea level would be too harsh, despite the many hours of sunshine - but the grapes from which the noble wine Radoin 1560 is made come from estates of the Perwanger family in the municipality of Montan. The village on the South Tyrolean Wine Road with the settlements of Pinzon and Glen lies in the broad and bright Adige Valley.

In the 15th century, the name Radoin stood for the mountain on which Sepp Perwanger's winery is run with high standards. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Josef Perwanger, who pressed his grapes on the farm in two barrels for decades. The grandfather's vineyard still belongs to the family - despite the massive political and economic upheavals and despite the wars of the past century. Today, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay are grown in the Kühmösl estate, as the one site is called. Sepp Perwanger has acquired two more vineyards in the nearby Glen. This is where the Pinot Noir Riserva, the signature wine, and the flagship of the young winery, grows.

The Arunda Winery devoted to sparkling wines is located in Meltina at 1,200 meters above sea level and is thus the highest one in all of Europe. That is not just an oddity, though, but rather part of the unique recipe for success from the founder of the winery, Josef Reiterer.

He is an oenologist but at first was on the road as a salesman of bottling equipment to the wineries of Europe. As such, he gathered a huge amount of experience, all of which flowed into the idea of setting up a mountain winery dedicated to sparkling wine. An idea which at first glance may have seemed crazy. But only at first glance. In the end, it is the natural temperature fluctuations at this elevation which make possible the calm maturation of the wine.

Added to this is the fact that Reiterer consistently produces his sparkling wine according to the méthode champenoise. “The méthode champenoise consists of carrying out the regeneration of the bottles through the addition of sugars and yeasts,” the sparkling wine expert from Meltina explains.

And because the clocks run slower up in the mountains, the sparkling wine from Arunda is given as much time as it needs. “It takes at least 24 months for the sparkling wines from Arunda to achieve the richness, elegance, and complexity that set them apart,” says Reiterer. And for some of the select cuvées, even that is much too short. They lie in the cellar for up to 70 months.

Thus a total of around 130,000 bottles are created every year of a dozen different sparkling wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir. Or as Reiterer himself calls them, pearly pleasures for the palate.

The luck of the Ramoser family is to have vineyards available in the best locations of Santa Maddalena. The luck of their customers is that these locations can also be tasted in the wines from the Untermoserhof Estate Winery in Bolzano.

It is not without reason that Georg Ramoser, who runs the family estate winery with his son Florian, names “sincere”, “unadulterated”, and “shaped by terroir” as attributes for his wine. It ought to be possible to taste the origin in the wines: the location of the vineyards, the work that lies behind the grapes and wine. “Our wines are captivating through their fullness, suppleness, and power, but without losing any juiciness or freshness,” Ramoser says.

All of this does not just appear by chance. After all, the vineyards of the Untermoserhof in Santa Maddalena offer the ideal conditions. But they also demand a lot from the Ramosers: “The steep slopes are associated with a lot of work by hand, but in the autumn, this is rewarded by optimal grape health and maturity,” the senior winegrower says.

In that way, a constantly high level of quality can be maintained – year after year, and for all of the wines in the assortment. “Our customers know to appreciate that,” Ramoser explains, seeing no reason to abandon the path that he has followed, since it involves getting wines into the bottle that are close to nature, genuine, and shaped by terroir in an unadulterated way.

But one thing is clear: that path is bound up with hard work. Including the hard work to always get better.

Wine has been made for nearly four centuries at the Unterganzner-Hof on the eastern edge of Bolzano. So it is no wonder that wine has become the great passion of the Mayr family. But in addition to that, there is a second one: “We all love music, and each one of us plays an instrument or sings,” says Josephus Mayr.

He runs the Mayr-Unterganzner Estate Winery in the tenth generation and also makes no secret of the fact that he profits from the preparatory work of his ancestors. Or, in more precise terms, from the selection of grapevines that was carried out with experience and a great deal of instinctive feeling. “Added to that is our precise work in the vineyard from pruning the vines to the late harvest and the gentle vinification in our own winery,” says Mayr.

And the ideal location, one is inclined to add. After all, the Mayr-Unterganzner Estate Winery is located in the classic Santa Maddalena zone and benefits from an outstanding red wine climate, good aeration, many hours of sunshine, and alluvial soils that warm easily. “The high plant density, the advanced age of the vines, and the pergola training also make their contribution,” the winegrower explains.

Thus what is created is Santa Maddalena as well as Lagrein that is rigorously matured in oak barrels that can age in the bottle for many years, classic wines that are still tirelessly honed. For example, making the cultivation more ecological is continuously pushed forward, and fungus-resistant vines are increasingly being planted. And where does Josephus Mayr see his estate winery in ten years? “In ten years, my son Josef will be running the estate. At that point, we will have been managing it for 401 years – hopefully with even better wines.”

Never stand still – that, too, is family tradition.

Mentioned in documents for the first time in 1545, the Perlhof Estate Winery, Max Thurner has existed for almost 500 years but is known more for its innovations than for its long tradition: “Never stand still, onward and upward, be brave enough to try new things, that’s what keeps us going,” explains Max Thurner, who, together with his family, is responsible for the entire wine production process at the Perlhof in Bozen-Oberleitach/Costa di Sopra-Bolzano: from growing the grapes all the way to bottling the wine.

The grapes for Max Thurner’s wines are grown in four different locations at altitudes ranging from 270 up to 550 meters above sea level on vineyards facing different directions, but all with excellent conditions. “The steep south-facing slopes around Bolzano/Bozen offer the perfect climate: masses of warm air rise from the Bolzano valley basin, while cooler streams of air come from the Eisacktal/Valle Isarco valley,” explains Thurner. In addition, the old vine stocks at the Perlhof grow on skeletal soil made up of quartz porphyry.

Not only four different locations but also four different wines characterize the range of products offered by the Perlhof Estate Winery. Aside from Santa Maddalena and Sauvignon, two classic wines, there is also a rosé made from Merlot grapes and the “Milo,” a cuvée made from Merlot and Schiava (Vernatsch). As the Perlhof never wants to stand still, it is continuously growing its range of wines.
 

Innovation yes, tricks no. When what is concerned is the further development of wines that are typical for the region, a clear line is followed at the Obermoser Estate Winery in Bolzano-Santa Maddalena. A line that was already prescribed by the forefathers of Thomas Rottensteiner more than a century ago.

Since 1890, the Obermoser Estate Winery has been in the possession of the Rottensteiner family, and since that time, the family has distinguished itself by not being so inclined to follow the well-trodden path. As early as 1929, Franz J.C. Rottensteiner had already launched the idea for an irrigation system that would provide water not only to his own vineyards, but to all of those surrounding them. The idea caught on, and Rottensteiner became the father of the first large-scale winegrowing irrigation system in all of Europe.

So being open to new ideas is in the blood of Thomas Rottensteiner, generation number five at the Obermoser Estate Winery. “For generations, we have been concentrating on the care, further development, and intensification of wines that are typical to the region – without tricks, but rather through innovation,” he says. Within that context, all of the innovations serve the promotion of the quality and individuality of the wines. And thus also of the grapes.

The latter grow in two areas that are far apart from each other. The larger of the two lies predominantly within the classic Santa Maddalena zone in Bolzano, while the smaller is in the core zone of the Lake Caldaro cultivation zone. Together, the two of them provide the raw material every year for around 34,000 bottles: from the classic Santa Maddalena to Lagrein and Cabernet all the way to Sauvignon Blanc.

Bernhard Pichler wanted to not only produce grapes, he wanted to keep the production of wine in his own hands from the vine to the labeling of the bottle. He has been doing so since 2003 at the Messnerhof in Bolzano and knows, “If the quality is good, then that is to our credit, and if sometimes something goes wrong, then we are just as responsible for it.”

Pichler is not the first one to make wine at the Messnerhof in Bolzano/San Pietro. Rather, they were producing wine themselves there up to the postwar period, after which the Pichlers concentrated upon the production of grapes. That is, until Bernhard came along. With the step to being independent, he realized a childhood dream.

The foundation of the wine production at the Messnerhof is formed by two vineyards. The first is located in Missiano in the community of Appiano, and at 0.8 hectares, it is only about half as big as the other one, which is found on a sunny slope with a southwestern exposure around the farmhouse in San Pietro. The climate is ideal at both locations. “Warm and then cooler winds provide prominent temperature fluctuations between day and night, which is optimal for the formation of aromas in the grapes,” Pichler says.

Within that context, the assortment of grapes is a broad one: Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Schiava, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are grown and then made into wine according to a clear guiding principle: “Our goal is to produce expressive wines,” Pichler says, “which preserve their independent characters of variety, location, and vintage.”

Along the hiking trail from Jenesien to Tschaufen, there is much to experience, for young and old. In the meadows along the hiking trail and in the forests you can meet different kinds of animals. There is a beautiful panorama on the plateau Tschaufen, and the the eponymous restaurant on the Salto awaits you with an extensive menu of homemade pastries and delicious cold dishes.

In the heart of Santa Maddalena lies the Waldgries manor in Bolzano. It was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1242, and is therefore one of the oldest estate wineries in and around Bolzano.

Winegrowing has been carried out here for around 700 years. In the sundrenched vineyards that lie directly at Waldgries Manor, the grape varieties of Schiava, Lagrein, and Red Muscat find the best terroir thanks to the Mediterranean climate. Among the total of 7.2 hectares which Christian Plattner tends are also grape growing areas in Ora and Appiano-Monte, in the latter of which are planted Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc. The results are multilayered wines, not least of which is Santa Maddalena which is given particular attention here and which is in fact among the wines of Alto Adige with the richest tradition and the most significant history.

A piece of new old history is written by the Antheos Santa Maddalena classico, a mixed vinestock that had nearly died out which was newly planted here around ten years ago and allows us to experience a voyage into the past in a bottle. On the artistically arranged wine path that leads directly from the parking lot through the estate, visitors can experience everything that is interesting and worth knowing about Waldgries Manor.
