From there, continue along the Almenweg, passing the Wasserfalleralm and the Saxnerhütte hut. We descend slightly to the viewpoint on the “Seitstein.” We then follow the Almenweg to the Äußere Wumblsalm, where we turn right at the signposted junction and descend via Trail No. 15, past the Kaserlichtalm, to the valley station of the cable car. We take the bus to Vierschach/Versciaco and from there the cable car up to the Helm (2.050 m). The Olperl’s Nature Park starts directly at the mountain station of the Helm cable car and leads to Olperl's best friends - into the realm of the alpine animal world. On the 1,5 km long circular trail you can discover 10 exciting adventure points - with great views of the summit world of the Sesto Dolomites. Exploring Olperl's Natur Park on the highest barefoot trail in the Dolomites (2.150 m) is soothing and healthy. In 1987 the Conturines Cave was discovered, a 200 m long cave at 2,750 m above sea level. Inside the cave, bones of a previously unknown cave bear species were found, which later received the name Ursus ladinicus. A good 1,000 meters of altitude, partly on scree, must be climbed before reaching the world's highest cave bear discovery site. The arduous climb is compensated for by beautiful stalactite figures inside the cave, where the herbivorous bears lived about 40,000 years ago. Demanding hike, only for experienced hikers. “Morning is the golden hour”. Never a truer word was said, as you’ll see when you get to the Rosszahnscharte ridge high above the Seiser Alm and behold the glow of early-morning light over the Dolomites at dawn. The hike begins in Compatsch, together with the mountain guide. You will hike together towards Panorama and, later, cross the slopes of the Goldknopf at the foot of the Rosszahnscharte ridge. A narrow hiking trail then winds upwards in a steep ascent to the Rosszahnscharte ridge (2,499 m), for the breath-taking beauty of the sunrise. Just a few minutes’ walk from here will take you to the Tierser Alpl mountain refuge, where you can recharge your batteries for the descent with a mountain breakfast. We hardly notice that we have overcome a height difference of 300 metres: the wonderful nature and the mountains make us forget all the suffering. After a well-deserved stop at the refuge, we have two options to return to the valley: either we descend along the same road on which we ascended or we take a path and experience some new emotions. How is the bark beetle influencing the forest ecosystem? What are the consequences of the Vaia storm on our woods? Are the effects of the bark beetle solely negative? How can we contribute to the health and recovery of our forests? Face to face with Roland, an expert forest guide who has closely followed the aftermath of the Vaia storm that struck our woods in 2018. We are in the 'Bosch de Ciaulunch', near the Campolongo pass. Walking through the forest with Roland, guests have the chance to witness the storm's impact on the forests and learn how the proliferation of the bark beetle is affecting the woodland ecosystem, finding ideal conditions for development within the habitat of the fallen trees. Roland's passion for nature is highly infectious, and it is in this way that the guest, armed with the information provided, gains a comprehensive understanding of the entire forest ecosystem, including the different types of trees present and their significance for biodiversity and forest health. Knowledge, as it is well known, is the most effective tool for the protection of any territory. This experience is part of ATIRA: a series of weekly meetings and excursions designed to raise awareness about crucial issues for maintaining sustainable territorial development.
