It is a three-aisled basilica with a perforated clerestory, flat ceiling and a bell tower with a pyramid roof. The church was inaugurated in 1897 and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

    Goldsmith Mall
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Eduard Mall’s name is still in display in the shop. He was apprenticed
after the Second World War to one of the legendary goldsmiths
of the city, namely Ferdinand Schubert (originally from
Vienna), who left him the shop after an accident made it difficult
for him to continue. In 1958, Eduard set up shop by opening a small
workshop in Piazza Erbe, which created jewellery and watches. In
the mid-1960s, Eduard Mall moved to Via Goethe. In 1970, his son
Günther became an apprentice in the family-run business, and he
deepened his skills in other places during the summer – especially
in small goldsmith workshops in Florence, Gallarate, Valenza, Padova
and Pforzheim. He worked on designing, preparing, and altering
jewellery and jewels. Even the women of the family have always
worked in the business: first, Gunther’s mother and sister, then his
wife Renata, who joined the family business in 1988. The couple has
been running the business since 2001.

    Shops
    Juwelier Resia, jewellery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
If you were ever to wonder what someone from the Don Bosco
neighbourhood looks like, then simply hit up Fabio Gambaroni, who
was born and brought up here. Back in the day, he and his grandmother
bought his first watch at the Juwelier Resia, then owned by
Elena Mittempergher, and who shared the premises with a watchmaker.
A small, simple range of products stood to attention: yellow
gold necklaces, silver bracelets for men, and some watches. Fabio
Gambaroni took over the shop in 1993 when he was only 24. He
loves his job and has been serving people on his own ever since.
    Stand-out traits
Talking is something Fabio is good at, be it for a chat or when advising
potential customers. If there’s a request, he’ll see to it, is what
he says with a big smile on his face. His attitude and the simple,
stylish interiors are what make the store so appealing in the first
place. He’s not interested in competing against the other, big dealers
    – he’d much rather focus on slipping between the cracks they
leave open, providing traditional and extraordinary items of jewellery.
He’s also happy to change watches’ batteries or refer people to
the right person if more complex repairs are required.

    Shops
    Juwelier Bonaldi, jewellery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
As a jeweller, Rosella Bonaldi has quite the keen eye. So she must
have seen something nobody else did when, over 60 years ago, she
opened her store among a row of modern apartments behind which
only green fields grew. However, since then, Bolzano has spread to
the south and new blocks of flats have sprung up like wild mushrooms.
More apartments mean more people, and more residents
mean potential customers. Bonaldi had moved from Bergamo to
try her luck by opening her own business. Fortune must favour
the bold, for it is still alive and kicking – thriving, actually – now
managed by her daughters when she stepped down in 1996. Right
place, right time, even when the gold and precious jewels business
snowballed, she was helped by three sisters in the shop. So while
the shop is still run by women as in the past, it has unfortunately
suffered a change of fortunes, reminiscent of those old Hollywood
movies, due to the dramatic change in how people shop. Bolzano’s
first shopping centre opened ten years ago to much fanfare, which
translated to a 30% drop in business for smaller stores. A trend
compounded by the rise of digitalisation and the resulting change in
how people now favour online shopping compared to visiting brick
    and mortar establishments.
The shop’s regular clientele spans three generations – but sisters
Elena and Silvia wanted to reach out to a new target market, especially
online consumers. Since then, they’ve made targeted investments
in their social media presence: their Youtube videos regale
people with details, facts, and trivia about diamonds, what is meant
by “pure gold”, and how to tell the difference between 24 karat
and 14 karat gold, or how to spot fake pearls from a mile away. And
believe it or not, you can also find them on TikTok and Instagram
showcasing their products, while Facebook is reserved for presenting
new products. Different media but all united by the family’s
    knowledge and expertise.

    T. Gasser, haberdashery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Let’s start at the very beginning with some hard facts. Therese Gasser
was born in Millan, near Bressanone, but at the tender age of 23 took
over the small haberdashery shop in Bolzano from her aunt Zenz Öttl.
Therese worked in the shop most of her life, supported by two apprentices,
sisters Kreszenz and Anna Kaufmann. In 1921, as she didn’t
have children, Therese decided to give her store and, with it, her
surname, to the “Gasser Gals” – her employees. In 1972, Anna’s niece,
Gertraud Sauer, née Kaufmann, took over the business after having
spent part of her married life in Munich and having acquired considerable
experience selling leather clothes. The small shop has been
run by women for the equivalent of four generations and became
Gertraud’s pride and joy – so much so she only stopped going in every
day at the ripe old age of 90! In 2011, her son Wolfgang Sauer stepped
up to oversee the business’ administration while two women still
advise and help clients find what they need in keeping with tradition.
    Shops
    J. Mohr, sewing machines
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Back in the day, Pfaff sewing machines were sold from door to door –
and that’s exactly what Josef Mohr from Swabia did. He opened the
shop in the Portici in 1911 and the range of products also included
typewriters and, at a later stage, gramophones, and records. His
sons, Alfred and Karl, grew the business with the help of their wives
by adding repair and delivery services. Christian Mohr represents
the third generation to run the business, and the trained sewing
machine technician became the store owner in 1990. He learnt the
importance of diligent work and being close to one’s customers
from his father Karl and mother Maria, phased out the slowly shrivelling
music department with its outdated CDs after renovating the
store, and got rid of wool and knitting utensils to expand his sewing
clientele with more professional and numerous services.

    Optician, photography
    Gianni, opticians
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
When it first opened at the end of the 1960s, the store was a third
of its current space. Gianni Guerra opened the opticians with wife
Vanda and their son Luca – the current owner – studied optometry
at university to then join the family business in 1995. Gianni also realised
his dream and received the master optician diploma 30 years
after his journeyman’s examination. Luca’s wife Arabella also joined
the company a few years later, just one of the many additions to the
    ever-growing company.
    Stand-out traits
Lucas and Arabella purchased an automatic phoropter at a trade fair
three years ago to provide high-precision results in vision measurement
and lens determination. The smart vision tester takes up one
of the rooms in the back of the store and has proved to be immensely
helpful when assessing the eyesight of children and the elderly.
On top of that, the store is the only authorised Cartier concessionaire
in South Tyrol. An important recognition as the luxury Parisian
brand selects its partners following strict criteria.

    Drugstore
    Thaler Beautiful things
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Back in the day, butchers would throw out whatever parts they
couldn’t use or sell into courtyards – but as the adage goes, somebody’s
trash is another’s treasure, and so chandlers would gleefully
collect those valuable ingredients to make their candles and soaps.
It made sense then for Josef Anton Thaler to open a soap workshop
in 1763 in the very same place where Thaler’s modern premises lie.
He was so successful he later went on to become a supplier of medical
goods to the court and a colonial warehouse and shop for the
local populations: local farmers would come into town to purchase
spices from the Middle East, among other items on display. In 1946,
the Schwienbacher family purchased the store. Hans Schwienbacher
was a far-sighted man who succeeded in creating a booming
business, set up a wholesale operation and then handed control
and oversight to his daughters Heidi and Veronika. The siblings are
still very much involved in running the company. At the turn of the
century, having a niche was seen as that extra special something –
in this case, exclusive perfumes, wellbeing and beauty routines, and
luxury design and furniture for the living areas. In 2012, the family
decided to expand their business and started dipping their toes in
    the beverage and restaurant world.

The historic archades are the heart of the medieval Commercial centre, a title that it has conserved up to the present day, thanks to the unbroken chain of Shops which Stretch out before you, some traditional and typical and others more modern and elegant. The facades are a bright presentation of different architectural styles: the bay windows, the stucco decorations. The old Town Hall has some beautiful archways, which are expecially nice, which now houses the Headquarters of the Local History Archive, built with a ponted arch with some nice fresco decorations. The alleys which connect to the parallel streets are also interesting. Of special mention are those of the old Town Hall, now home to the Town Records Office, with pointed arches and pleasant decorative fresco effect. also of note are the alley which connect to the parallel streets that maintain the architectural style of the buildings around and abound in various activities (shops, warehouses, cellars, courtyards, workshops).

    Oberrauch Zitt, fashion
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
If only walls could talk, this building alone would be worth a visit. It
was home for 170 years to a dynasty which traded in fabrics, founded
by the cloth merchant Anton Oberrauch, and is now a successful
Italian fashion and sporting goods empire. When renovating the
premises in the 1950s, the operation was seen as an opportunity
to rethink the business – which is what the head of the family did.
Heinrich Oberrauch (†2017) converted the fabric shop into a prêt-aporter
shop and merged it with the Zitt fashion store (which belonged
to his mother Julie Zitt in Merano). Et voila, the Oberrauch Zitt brand
was born. A brand which also encapsulated a guiding principle, i.e.
leveraging tradition and reinterpreting it. The flash of genius struck
Heinrich during his honeymoon in Scandinavia when he noticed how
Norwegian sweaters were flying off the shelf when marketed as souvenirs.
That was the beginning of the traditional costume and loden
fashion brand, Oberrauch Zitt, with Luis Trenker one of its most loyal
customers. Nowadays, when you think of “loden” you automatically
think of Oberrauch Zitt – a fabric that soon helped South Tyrol to
market itself as a tourism destination besides staple “products” such
as apples, wine and the Dolomites. Train stations are weird, wonderful
places – but surely the sight of lodens being delivered while trains
passed by Bolzano must have been a bit too much! But that’s just
how much Oberrauch Zitt’s loden were appreciated. One of Heinrich’s
sons – current owner Heiner Oberrauch – became the store’s manager in 1999 and founded the Lodenwelt in Vandoies, which also
included a museum, as well as the Oberalp/SALEWA group of sporting
goods together with his brother Georg (see globus on page 47),
the Sportler company and many, many more.

    Places to See
Piazza del Grano a Bolzano/Kornplatz in Bozen
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Various alleys and through roads link via Portici with the backstreets and parallel roads, Dr. Streiter and Argentieri. Take one of these, vicolo della Pesa, and you can reach piazza del Grano, where the farmers' market was once held. It is one of the oldest places in Bolzano, once hosting the castle of the Prince-Bishops of Trento (destroyed in 1277 by Mainardo II di Tyrolo) and the church of Sant'Andrea (destroyed in 1785). One of the most picturesque buildings of the city is situated to the north of this square: la casa della Pesa (1634), public weigh-house until 1780.
