The success-filled story of one of South Tyrol's best-known companies sounds like a fairy tale. Once upon a time ... about 50 years ago, a married couple decided to turn their dreams into reality.
So began this fairy tale that, far from being over, shows us today a company that produces highly successful ceramic giftware, porcelain tableware and tiled stoves.

    Fruit and Vegetable Market
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

This is one of the most suggestive places in town, thanks to its long and curved shape and colourful fruit and vegetable market. Neptune's Fountain is waiting for you, a masterpiece signed by Joachim Reis, based on the model of Georg Mayr from Völs (1745). On the opposite corner a plaque reminds visitors of the existence of the "Zur Sonne" Hotel where, among others, even Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Emperor Joseph II and the German literate and philospher Johann Gottfried Herder stayed.

Josef Kreuzer, late judge, businessman and art collector of Bozen/Bolzano, donated in January 2017 in his testament his building in the historical city center with a collection of more than 1.500 artworks of about 300 artists of South Tyrol, Tyrol and the Trentino to the Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano. The only condition for this gift was to make the building and the artworks accessible to the public as a museum. On the ground floor of the building is situated the Art Space Eccel Kreuzer, a place for temporary exhibitions.

    Tiozzo, specialised paperhanger and decorator
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
Tiozzo Severino was born in the province of Padova in 1923. He was
a paperhanger and the grandfather of today’s owner. The young
tradesman moved to Bolzano and in 1946 decided to set up his own
business in Via Genoa. The store specialised in producing wool mattresses.
A niche product if there ever was one. But back in the day
it sold exceptionally well, and was particularly well received by the
Italian immigrants living in the Semirurali worker neighbourhood,
which had been created after World War II. All things change and, in
1959, grandfather Severino moved to Via Torino and stopped selling
mattresses in favour of curtains and wallpapers. In 1985, his sons
Roberto and Silvano joined the family-run business, and his nephew
Mirco took over after his uncle retired in 2006.
    Stand-out traits
The modern store boasts floor-to-ceiling windows which flood
the store with plenty of natural light. This setup also establishes a
direct connection with Bolzano’s industrial estate’s busy roads, as
the store is located opposite the historical Valbruna steelworks and
right next to the innovative NOI techpark. What all the business’
clients have in common is measures scribbled on sheets of paper or the blueprint of their apartment, the key ingredients when purchasing
duvets and kitchen linen, curtains, awnings, and solutions
to provide shade. All these are tailored or adapted to the client’s
specifications in the workshop on the first floor, while the workshop
in the cellar is where the upholstery magic takes place across a sea
    of divans, armchairs, and chairs.

    Leifers Town Hall
    Laives/Leifers, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

The town hall and neighboring extension of the church were conceived for a town building competition focused on restructuring the town center. The town hall is distinctly recognizable, with its tower and spacious square in front − identifiable features of the public building. The angular building has a north facing glass facade in front of which stands a row of pillars. These support the large overhang of the roof and are as high as the four-story building. The stone materials used for covering the facade were sourced locally from Europe's largest porphyritic stone deposit in Bolzano. Dark metal constructions for the window frames and exposed copper for the roof complete the selection of materials. Behind the main entrance the visitor is welcomed into a three-story high spacious atrium, which leads onto light rooms without a hint of claustrophobia.

    Landhaus 11
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

The rather unattractive post office of the 1950s was converted into a passive house to be used as an administration building. The addition of two more stories improved its size, also in relation to the surrounding area. Next to the elegant station tower, the stairwell of this old building no longer fit in and was covered with solar panel elements during the conversion. The bulky body of the building was brought to life through various window designs, which allow for an interplay of shadow and light. The 3% extra costs spent on energy-saving technology for the building has paid itself within five years: this gold low-energy house only costs 45 euro per worker on heating, as opposed to the 270 euro buildings in category C pay. This is, in fact, the first office block in Italy that meets passive house standards. The interior, with its wide corridors for special uses, is light and friendly, using only the simplest materials.

    Luigi Einaudi Province Vocational School
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

This vocational school underneath Mount Virgl in Haslach was created through a competition in 1975. The compact building complex comprises four units: the three-part office and classroom wing, the two wings of the workshops, the auditorium and the gym. The concrete construction with exposed brick infill forms a very sustainable structure for which an expansion program was developed in the 1990s, which led to the addition of another story onto the previously built three-story class and office building. On the ground floor a meeting room for 150 people was built, with foyer and control room. At the same time, the technical infrastructure – heating, sanitary facilities, water treatment system with solar collectors – was renovated and upgraded. The addition of the new story matches the existing building structure, but is clearly recognizable as an extension.

    Salewa Headquarters
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Anyone who approaches Bolzano/Bozen from the south along the A22 will see the Salewa building, to the right of the highway, a modern gateway to the city. Three office towers, with four, seven and twelve floors respectively, are set in a urban dialogue one with the other and with the surrounding mountain landscape. Through the freely formed designs as well as the facades of dark glass and gray aluminum, the building mass retreats and yet, at the same time, matches the colors of the mountain. In the seemingly unusually shaped building volumes made of a reinforced concrete structure with curtained glass and/or metal facades, South Tyrol’s largest climbing gym is housed in addition to the company warehouse and administrative offices. This structure adjoins a small recreational park with a garden area and a restaurant, which matches Salewa’s sporting goods production nicely.

Museum Pons Drusi - Remains of the Roman Era

During the construction work of the Center for the Care of the Elderly, some extraordinary evidence of the Roman Era (1st century AD) was brought to light: a richly frescoed building with a columned hall and a massive structure, probably the base of a temple or a monument. To date, the archeological area is considered the most important testimony of Pons Drusi, i.e. Bolzano Bozen in the Roman era. The settlement stood at the intersection of the Roman road between the Val d'Isarco and the Val d'Adige along the Via Claudia Augusta.

    Sigmundskron Castle
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Sigmundskron is a symbol found in South Tyrol's early history. It was first mentioned in 945 and was built into a fortress in 1473 by Duke Sigmund. In 1996 the ruins were taken over by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen and in 2003 they were handed over to Reinhold Messner to be transformed into the Messner Mountain Museum. The preservation of the character and protection of the ruins was the main concern during the conversion building works. The steel constructions which were developed for this purpose were positioned at a distance with as few contact points as possible with the outer stone walls and the interior of the towers and rooms, so that these seemingly light architectural elements can be removed at any time. The design of these sections of the building has been kept as simple as possible, and they are clearly set apart from the historical parts of the building. This allows for a distinct demarcation of the old and the new.

    Tobacconist Peter
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Peter’s father was one of the most important butchers in the city,
whereas his mother followed her own path and opened her own
tobacco store in 1955 – Peter was a 1-year-old baby – in Don Bosco, a
neighbourhood which mostly comprises Italian-speaking Bolzanini.
Idle hands weren’t something the family believed in, so Peter started
helping out at the shop during the school breaks and holidays. It
soon dawned on him, at the start of the 60s upon finishing school,
that he’d be taking over the business.
The shop is a true cave of wonders: every square inch seems to be
bursting with products, and the 60 m² stock whatever you may
    need – and then some. Toys, stationery, cards for every occasion;
however, the pride and joy of the venue is its tobacco, especially pipes and all the relevant tools, and a wealth of different tobacco.
Oh, and don’t forget to try your luck and buy a scratch card or play
your lucky numbers at the lottery.

Luca Pintimalli is a bona fide coffee maestro, a passion he has
nurtured from a very early age all thanks to his mother. She’d discovered
the café boasting its very own roastery. It was love at first
sight. “The first exclusive roastery in Bolzano, a universe of green
coffee beans and an aroma which wafted across the entire neighbourhood.”
His parents purchased Tropical Caffè in 1981 from the
previous owners, who’d been running it for two generations in the
Europa-Novacella neighbourhood. Luca was brought up between
jute coffee bags and behind the shop’s counter. He contributed
more to the business as his mother, Nadia, started to decline due
to a severe sickness; in 2014, she passed away, and Luca decided to
interrupt his studies in Padova and Trento to dive headfirst into the
universe of coffee. He never looked back and was swept away by the
world of coffee, raw materials, and supply chains, making him the
    coffee expert he is today.
Your senses come alive upon crossing the tiny café’s door. You’re
enveloped in a sweet, heady aroma of coffee, and your gaze sweeps
over the coffee grinders and all the other necessary equipment, select chocolate pralines, Italian sugared almonds, and rare sweets,
until it rests on the valuable coffee beans from the four corners of
the world. Aha! The culprits of that wonderful aroma. The café is a
meeting point for all coffee gourmands from the neighbourhood
and the city at large. If you fancy tasting the same coffee prepared
using different methods – from an espresso machine through a
French press, paper filter to much, much more, you’re in coffee Eldorado.
You can also purchase exclusive coffee-based gifts or simply
find out more about the vast and diverse world of coffee.
