A nice double summit as a south-westerly cornerstone between the Penaudtal Valley and the Schlandrauntal Valleys. Ascent from Certosa/Karthaus through the Penaudtal Valley as far as Mountain pasture Penaud (2,319 m a.s.l). Initially climbing more to the right through the little valley, then more to the left towards the Zerminiger gap (2,850 m a.s.l) that is located between Roßkopf (2,891 m a.s.l) and Zerminiger (right). Now, continue either westwards towards the easily reached Westgipfel (3,059 m a.s.l) with a summit cross or northwestwards to the main summit, where you will finally have to remove your skis. The descent is more or less the same as the ascent.

For good skiers.

The 500 m long climb is perfectly secured with 1000 m of steel cable, is rated at medium difficulty (A - B – in some places B/C) and is suitable for the less strong alpinists or for families with enthusiastic young climbers (14 years and older). An early start, alpine experience and a good overall physical condition is a prerequisite for the ascent of the climbing route. Along the ascent, there is no water and no escape routes. A withdrawal is possible only by down-climbing. The via ferrata is fully secured with a steel cable and no passages have to be dealt with in unsecured terrain or by free climbing. Many steep and difficult sections have been mitigated with steel clamps, which function as steps. Nevertheless, the last part of the via ferrata, the so-called Angel’s edge, presents a very impressive rock passage. The orientation of the via ferrata to the southwest allows for an early ascent of the route, and the climbing season extends well into late autumn (total climbing time: 2-3 hours).

Finailspitze (often spelt Fineilspitze) is a fascinating tour in the Schnalstal Valley offering landscape and archaeological treasures. There is a spectacular view from the summit to the glacier world of the Ötztal Alps: in the east to the Niederjoch glacier with Similaun, Marzellspitze, and to the Hintere Schwärze, in the south towards the Tisental Valley, Schnalstal Valley with the Schlandrauner Mountains opposite, to the Hochjochferner glacier with a view of the Weißkugel. We are following in the footsteps of Ötzi, the Iceman.

Starting point: Maso Corto/Kurzras, Masi Kofel/Koflhöfe (1,938 m a.s.l.)
Ascent: 949 m elevation gain, 3 hours
Best time: December to April

A pleasant tour and not too difficult; only the part through the woods, along the narrow Sommerweg is somewhat difficult, especially when descending. The ascent starts at Koflhof farm (0.7 km before Maso Corto/Kurzras), moving southwards through the Lagauntal Valley. Before the valley basin, go to the right up the slope north-westwards, arriving at Stotz, north of the Saldurkamm mountains. You can descend either by the same route or by going north via Lazaun Mountain hut to Maso Corto/Kurzras.

Also suitable for intermediate-level skiers.

The high mountain valley has always been an important crossing from Laces/Latsch and Kastelbello/Kastellbell in Vinschgau Valley, where there were already settlements during the Copper Age, as seen with the menhir in Latsch. Recent archaeological finds in the ground around the Penaudalm Mountain Hutand the old mountain farm suggest that this area had been used as a hunting ground not only since the Mesolithic Age but that the high plateau already had a seasonal settlement from the Bronze Age on. We are still waiting for the results of analyses to see if the buildings discovered were connected to milk processing, that is to say, cheese production.

The Lazinser Alm is located at the end of the Pfelderertal valley at the foot of the Hohe Wilde mountain. The Lazinser Alm is a favourite hiking goal for young and old, with a wonderful location that has been left natural but is still easy to reach. The Lazinser Alm is more of a stately house than a mountain hut, where one can enjoy the summer days outdoors on their large veranda. Like at the Timmelsalm mountain hut, numerous cattle graze the pastures of the Lazinser Alm.
Difficulty: a problem-free hike in every aspect, suitable even for weaker hikers or children. Walking time from Pfelders/Plan, approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes.

For centuries now, the inhabitants of St. Martin im Kofel, located above Laces/Latsch, have been making the pilgrimage over the Niederjöchl pass (2,662 m a.s.l) to the pilgrimage site of Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau, in order to pray together with the people of Senales for a good harvest.

Short and attractive course suitable for baby carriages just above the tree line, with stunning panoramic views.

Also orographically speaking to the right of the Penaudtal Valley and more southerly towards Vinschgau Valley. The ascent is also from Certosa/Karthaus into the Penaudtal Valley, as with the ski tour to the Grubenspitze, but to Mountain pasture Penaud; continue up the Penaudtal Valley, take a left at altitude 2,500 and climb the lateral valley in a south-easterly direction. It is possible to reach the summit on skis. Descend by the same route.

For good skiers.

This unglaciated peak on the southern edge of the Ötztal Alps is on the border between Italy and Austria and is one of the easiest 3000 m-peaks to climb in the mountain range. It offers a wonderful panorama view towards the southern Schnalstal Valley and the Weißkugel (3,739 m a.s.l.).

Together with the Kleinen Wiegenspitze that is situated slightly northwards, the Hohe Wiegenspitze rises between the Mastauntal and the Penaudtal valleys. Follow the trail from Certosa/Karthaus into the Penaudtal valley, as in ski tours to the Grubenspitze, the Vermoi Peak and and the Mountain Zerminiger. At mountain pasture Penaud (2,319 m a.s.l), take a right and follow the rather steep but sunny southern slope upwards to the summit. You can descend either by the same route or through the Mastauntal valley (ski tour to the Hohe Wiegenspitze from Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau).

For practised skiers.

This hike on the Ifinger peak (2.581m), Scena's local mountain, provides a magnificent panoramic view of the Merano mountains, but requires a head for heights and is only recommended for sure-footed, experienced hikers.

Uphill and downhill possible with skis from  to Certosa/Karthaus if the snow conditions are good. Referred to as Gamseck on some maps. The ascent is from Certosa/Karthaus along the road to Farmstead Sennhof and then on the forest path to malga del convento, above Certosa/Karthaus, from there continue southwards to the highest and rather steep ascent to the secondary summit of the Trumserspitze.

Descent A: The same as the ascent route and the road to Certosa/Karthaus.

Descent B: Northwards to malga del convento and along the forest path as far as the viewing point for Certosa/Karthaus and then directly downhill to Certosa/Karthaus through the forest aisle.

For practised skiers

The Höfeweg above Schenna provides insights into the rural cultural and natural landscape. The combination of historic farmsteads and fabulous views of Merano and its environs make this hike a genuine delight.

Starting point: Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau (1,508 m a.s.l)
Ascent: 1,472 m elevation gain, 4.5 hours
Best time: December to May

Together with the Kleinen Wigenspitze that is slightly northwards, the Hohe Wiegenspitze rises between the Mastauntal and the Penaudtal valleys. Climb from Unser Frau through the Mastauntal valley, passing by the beautifully situated Mountain pasture Mastaun  (1,810 m a.s.l). At the end of the valley, once you have negotiated the steep slope you will be on flat ground again. The trail continues, taking a sharp left, over the hollows of a wide valley and finally rising sharply over the western ridge to the summit. Descend by the same route.

For good skiers with Alpine experience

This challenging glacier tour for experienced Alpinists, featuring magnificent views of the Ötztal Alps, begins in the Vernago/Vernagt car park with limited parking spaces.

A delightful scenic circuit of the lake requiring some concentration.

The heart of the Texelgruppe Nature Park is the largest side valley of the Schnalstal Valley and can only be reached by a single, partly steep road, passing ancient farms. From the paid parking lot at the Vorderkaserhof Inn you continue on foot.

This route follows the forest road, along an old and gradually ascending military route (easy route), with some Alpine terrain (individual snow fields are possible).

The crossing of the Eisjöchl ridge is only advised when the Stettiner Hütte Alpine hut is open (normally between 1 July – end of September, depending on weather conditions). Information about the opening hours can be obtained from the Schnalstal Valley tourist office or the Passeiertal Valley tourist office, which can  also inform you about current conditions on the ridge.

The Stettiner Hütte was swept away by an avalanche in 2013/14. It was rebuilt in 2020/2021 and has been open again since summer 2022.

Orographically speaking, situated to the right of Penaudtal Valley. Very popular due to the wonderful long downhill runs through the Penaudtal Valley. Ascend from Certosa/Karthaus on the road to Farmstead Sennhof and then towards Penaudtal Valley (on a forest path). Rising southwards through the valley until the trail is wider, before the plateau at the Mountain pasture Penaud (2,150 m a.s.l). Take a left here and climb along the steepening lateral valley in a south-easterly direction. Finally, continue to the summit (remove skis, if necessary) over a ridge with a number of quite difficult sections. Descend by the same route.

For good skiers.

The fourth stage of the Merano High Mountain Trail involves a moderately difficult hike from Monte S. Caterina/Katharinaberg through Pfossental Valley to the Mountian pasture Eishof.

An extremely interesting and beautiful trail through Pfossental valley, part of the Texelgruppe Nature Park. This is the largest nature park in South Tyrol and if you’re lucky, you’ll see some of the fauna that lives here.

Starting at the village square in Platt, along the main street (direction Pfelders) until shortly after the fire brigade hall − here the path goes upwards through the forest and meadows. Follow the path no. 6 upwards to the farm Farmazon (about 45 min.). Then take the path 10B leading into the Farmazon valley. After only about 15 min. the Platter ancient larches are reached. Mighty larches with a huge extent and a history of thousand years. Short ascent, where a beautiful rest area with a stone table invites for a break. Follow the path no. 10 back in direction to Platt/Plata.
