    Churches & Monasteries
    Church at Monte Santa Caterina/Katharinaberg
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

After the tight canyon at the entrance to the valley, the valley widens and you will see the chapel of the village of Monte S. Caterina/Katharinaberg on your right. The chapel is like a signpost for the village. Once upon a time, this rocky hill was crowned with the castle of the „Lords of Schnals“, which gave the valley its name. Not only the inhabitants, but also our guests enjoy life in the village: the mild climate, lots of sun, stillness, wonderful hiking routes with direct access to the Merano High Mountain Trail in the Texelgruppe Nature Park, as well as some picturesque views into the valley and over the mountains.

Via ferrata "Heini Holzer" - Ivigna
    Hafling/Avelengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The 500 m long climb is perfectly secured with 1.000 m of steel cable and it is rated at medium difficulty (A – B – in some places B/C). Nevertheless, the last part of the via ferrata, the so-called Angel’s edge, presents a very impressive rock passage.

Due to the nature of the new via ferrata, the climb can be a bit of an adventure for less experienced mountaineers as well as mountaineering families with children who like walking and climbing. The minimum recommended height is 1.50 m.

    Farnstead Finailhof
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

The Farmstead Finailhof is one of the oldest farms in Schnalstal Valley, first records date back to the 11th century. It is known for its rare visit in 1416. Those days the farmers harbored Duke Frederick IV by employing him as a shepherd. Until 1967, the farm was highest one in Europe which cultivated cereals. To preserve the rural culture and architecture the entire farm became a listed building in 1981. Today the family Gurschler lives with four generations on the farm and welcomes guests in their „Stube“ and a huge sunny terrace with a great view over the lake Vernago/Vernagt.

    Churches & Monasteries
Nals river chapel - Holy Cross Chapel
    Tisens/Tesimo, Meran/Merano and environs

Previously, this was the most visited chapel in the region. It is only 15 minutes by foot from the village centre, situated above the Nalserbach farmhouse at the road leading to Prissian, which was previously also called the Calvary mountain. In the archives of the Tisens parish church, the Nals river chapel was first mentioned in 1713. However, it is most likely older than this date.

    Churches & Monasteries
    St. Helena Kirchlein church
    St.Pankraz/San Pancrazio, Meran/Merano and environs

The small church is located on a wooded hillside (at 1,532 m), visible from far away. It is a popular destination for leisurely walks and excursions into nature. The church was first chronicled in 1338. In successive years, it was re-built several times and finally inaugurated by the bishop of Trento in 1698. The neo-Romanesque high altar distinguishes itself through its beautiful baroque statues, and the altar piece is also very attractive.

Extension for Savoy Province Vocational School
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

A very reserved building structure was created on a narrow building site between the multiform heritage-listed building of the former Grand Hotel Savoy and some simple row houses. The basic cubic shape tapers slightly at both of the lower floors, lending the solid building a floating feeling. Staggered windows in the facades, uniform in size, break up the building’s austerity. A transparent, visually light glass bridge elegantly links the new building with the facade of the old Savoy. The simple form of the new concrete structure, with flat roof, lends both buildings a contrapuntal aesthetic appeal. The cool clarity of the design is also reflected in the interior of the new building, which has a transparent and fluidly designed sequence of rooms.

    Pergola Residence
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

In the vineyards above the village this structure comprising four staggered terraces, was graded into the hillside. The building was integrated so harmoniously into the vineyards that it has become a part of them. This integration is still underlined by the dry-stone retaining walls, which likewise carry forward the vineyard structure. The building’s concrete structure remains invisible, covered by wooden paneling and by the wooden grating set in front of portions of the glass facades. Floor-to-ceiling glazing of the spaces lends the terraces a transparency, covered by the wooden pergolas, with the shadowy effect of over-grown foliage. The reception and breakfast room, paneled entirely in wood, are good examples of a modern interpretation of rural Stube parlors. The apartments are also of high aesthetic quality.

    Culture & Attractions
    Tyrol Castle
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Tyrol Castle, the long-neglected seat of the Counts of Tyrol, gave the province of South Tyrol its name. In 2003 this historical symbol was finally converted into a province museum. The existing castle was thus secured, and its structure clearly highlighted. Excavations in front of the castle yielded Romanesque building components, which were added to the exhibition circuit in a separate building. In addition to specific interventions in the interior spaces, the contemporary structural elements made of Corten steel and glass are visible, especially in the outer bailey and castle keep, which deals with the history of the twentieth century. The existing and the insertions were clearly separated one from the other. Alongside its architecture, the artistic insertions play a predominant role in reflecting the new spirit of the historical building.

    Eiche Residential Building
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

The housing complex is situated north of the racetrack in a quiet residential area. The rectangular plot of land is reflected in the geometric lines of the four-story block of apartments containing sixteen flats: The outlines and facade are simple and clear, without any design effects. A large protruding attic forms a concise end to the roofline. The division of the front of the lightly plastered walls occurs through two types of window: full length balcony windows, and the windows of the rooms reaching up to the ceiling, which are placed in alternation, creating a lively structural arrangement. The colorful balcony parapets add to the visual effect. The clear design is of particular benefit inside the well laid out apartments − everything is light, friendly and easy to furnish.

Visiting the town of Certosa/Karthaus is like a journey into the past. The town was built inside the walls of the Cloister of Certosa degli Angeli, founded in 1326 and reopened in 1782. The Via Crucis of the ancient cloister is especially interesting.

    Meran Burggräfler Winery
    Marling/Marlengo, Meran/Merano and environs

After the Burggräfler Winery merged with Meran's winery, it gave up its base, the former building of the Burggräfler Winery on the outskirts of Marling was converted and extended. The facade of the old winery building became a solid wall with remnants of the previous design left on it, behind which the cellar rooms stretched back deep into the mountainside. The cellar rooms are practically separated by the wall from the management's rooms fronted by glass paneling and the tasting room for customers. The cellar rooms can be accessed at ground level on the highest side of the sloping property near the car park. The huge concrete construction of the cellars bear the weight of the pavilion made of light steel and decorated solely in dark wood furnishing. These slightly tinted and offset glass elements provide a splendid view of the Etsch Valley.

    Churches & Monasteries
Church of pilgrimage Madonna di Senales
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

Both the delightful Baroque-style pilgrimage church, built in 1304 and expanded in 1765, and the nearby cemetery with its artistic graveyard crosses made of copper and bronze by local artists are well worth a visit. The village of Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau celebrated its 700th anniversary as a place of pilgrimage in the year 2004. It is, in fact, one of the oldest pilgrimage centres in the entire Tyrol region.
