    Churches & Monasteries
    Saint Martin’s church
    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

The church was built during the 12th Century and is the oldest monument in Scena. It was constructed according to the Carolingian measurements, has two naves with one round apses each and two central octagon pillars. Previously, in both apses, there was an altar, one of which was consecrated to Saint Martin. For safety reasons, this late-Gothic altar, originating from the 16th Century, was transferred into the old parish church. After a number of small changes, the church received its current shape in 1922, as the Italian Department for Monuments intended to put an emphasis on the Roman monuments in South Tyrol. Today, the church is used as a commemoration chapel for the dead.

    St. Moritz Kirchlein church
    Ulten/Ultimo, Meran/Merano and environs

High up on a sunny slope, at 1,640 m a.s.l., is the small St. Moritz Kirche church. The Crusaders probably rested here, while on their way to the Val Venosta/Vinschgau Valley. Later, it served as a hospice for Church travelers on pilgrimages to Rome. Today, the St. Moritz Kirche is a popular hiking destination. Cultural fans, in particular, are attracted to views of the impressive fescoes from the 15th century. Also note the pointed arch portal, rebuilt in the late Gothic period, decorated with a simple stucco vault from the 17th century and the main altar with a picture of St. Moritz.

    Churches & Monasteries
    St. Rupert’s Church
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

The church, mentioned as far back as 1332, with its flat ceiling was increased in height in the late Gothic period and lengthened by the chancel with ribbed vaults above short round pillars and pointed corbels. The church was rededicated in 1472. The small tower that was built from hewn stone at the same time as the chancel remained incomplete and was later finished in brick.

In 1900 the church was extensively renovated. There is a large painting on the façade at the top of which the earlier, lower gable can be seen. In addition there is a broad border with small bust portraits in quatrefoils. On the southern side is the sundial which bears the date 1537. Inside there are traces of gilded frescoes from the early 15th century. The winged shrine with ancient sculptures is of the Schnatterpeck school.

St. Rupert’s Church was most recently renovated in 2007/08, and the altar dedication took place on 21st September 2008.

    Churches & Monasteries
    Church of St. Peter
    Lana, Meran/Merano and environs

Churches that are dedicated to St. Peter are usually very old churches. For this reason it comes as no surprise that a Church of St. Peter was mentioned in the parish archive as long ago as 1305. The church of St. Peter in Mitterlana was built in its present form in 1680.

The church features elements of the Renaissance and Baroque periods in both its structure and elaborate furnishings. Alterations, renovations and additions took place between 1770 and 1776, in 1836, 1860, 1901/02 and in 1986.

    Churches & Monasteries
    Sant Ulrico Church
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

Located on the left bank of the Adige River in the direction of Val Venosta (Vinschgau) valley, there is an accumulation of rubble from Plars. The villages of Plars di Mezzo (Mitterplars) and Plars di Sopra (Oberplars) are found here, as well as the beautiful Late Gothic Church Sant'Ulrico, surrounded by orchards and vineyards. The church was first documented in 1493, although it was most likely built even earlier. At the time, the church belonged to the Bavarian monastery of St. Mang in Füssen. The external frescoes on the southern side of the church are particularly worth visiting.
