The Gaul Canyon....craggy and beautiful

Bizarre rock formations, unique vegetation and the picturesque location at the foot of Castle Braunsberg make the Gola Canyon in Lana charming and unique.

Only a few minutes from the centre of Lana you feel like you are in a different world: the Gola Canyon directly at the foot of the hill on which Castle Braunsberg is towering.

Steep rocky slopes rise above the pebbly riverbed of the Falschauer. Between the cool rock walls the temperature stays fresh even at the height of summer. A number of different rock types come together here.

Between the quartz porphyry and the primary gneiss rocks there is also a thin layer of granite. Between the massive rocks the mountain stream runs untamed and only a slim strip of land passes over the river.

Already for some decades the easily accessible meadow at the centre of the Gola Canyon has been used as a venue for numerous events. The glade is used for summer feasts as well as an atmospheric backdrop for the Lana open-air theatre.

From the Gola Meadow the well secured path continues over a number of suspension bridges deeper into the rocky canyon passing by a roaring waterfall.

You can follow it either into the narrowing,wild and romantic canyon or up to Castle Braunsberg, where a lovely view over Lana awaits you.

From the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, mentioned for the first time in 1323, today are only preserved some walls.

The oldest settlement traces of Naturno are the huge rock formations of „Neuräutl“ at the "Leitenhang" above Compaccio in Naturno.

The Neuräutl area is located on Naturnser Sonnenberg, where a large rock formation rises out of the mountainside in the shape of a roof. The protective cavity underneath was first used as a dwelling in the Stone Age around 11,000 years ago. This makes the rocky roof one of the earliest settlement sites discovered in the Venosta Valley to date. In Roman times, the Middle Ages and up until the 19th century, the rock also served as a shelter from time to time. The artefacts are on display in the Prokulus Museum in Naturns. On display are Finds from the Stone Age: tools made from flint (silex): blades and scrapers. 9th-8th millennium BC Middle Stone Age and finds from the Roman period: fragment of a Roman bronze coin. 2nd-1st century BC

The historic bridge of stone in the center of Prissiano (called "Stuanbogen") was first mentioned in 1308. By 1591 at the latest, the bridge was provided with a roof and was used to store the fire ladder.

"Eye-catchers" and wonderful views

Lana and its neighbouring villages benefit from a truly unique location as they are situated in the middle of the Adige Valley and at the same time nestled at the feet of high mountain ranges. Thus, the villages of Lana, Burgstall and Gargazon can enjoy the convenience of the mild valley basin and of the rough mountain climate alike. Winters in the valley are usually mild and visitors who prefer fresh mountain air instead of hot summer days will find relief when driving through the lower mountain range.

Another privilege of this geographical position is definitely the panoramic view. Within a 7-minute drive is the Mount Vigiljoch or the village of Völlan where you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Adige Valley and the Rosengarten group of the Dolomites or further on to the city of Merano and the capital of Bolzano. Sometimes you will wish to know more about one or the other sight you might see from above.

This is why hikers more and more find so called "Eye-catchers" (German: "Hingucker") on strategic lookout points. These are permanently installed telescopes that provide good views but also information about the sights.

Historic, little Church St. Prokulus, just outside the village of Naturns, is well-known for its wonderful Medieval frescos and has even more to offer now that a museum about its history opened in Spring 2006.The museum, housed under-ground a mere short walk from the church itself,  multi-media trip back into the past.

The ticket is available at the museum. Free admission with the museumobil Card and the Museumcard. We offer tablets to guide you trough the museum trail in English.

Standing on the rocky hillside near Stuls, a stunning view down to the village of Moos and across the far end of the Passeiertal valley opens up before you. Two garnets, modelled on the geological rock formations found in the Passeiertal valley, serve as an exhibition room and a viewing platform.

Completely built in red porphyry. Built in 1899-1902 in the neo-Romanesque style, the lovely mosaic above the main portal was installed in 1903. The tower was only completed in 1930.

In 1843, in Untersirmian, the small Heart of Jesus church was built, which is the first of a  few churches, which were consecrated to the heart of Jesus. The simple building houses a Baroque altar from the 18th Century (1713). The tower was finished in 1857.

This Neo-Gothic Church was originally the chapel of the "Dame Inglesi" It was designed by Ferdinand Mungenast, and built in 1903. The longitudinal plan ends in an apse which is decorated with a striking mosaic of over three million pieces, in neo-Byzantine Ravenna style. It depicts Christ seated in majesty, flanked by Mary and Joseph an angels, with the hand of God, the Creator, above. In the lower part of the mosaic there is a row of six saints interspersed with palm trees.

Arriving at the end of the Pfossental Valley you get to farmstead Vorderkaser (1,693 m a.s.l). The farm, situated in the Texel Group Nature Park, consists of several buildings that were originally built in the 13th century. Häuserl am Stein is one of the most fascinatingly odd buildings in all of South Tyrol. Its history, in fact, sounds a bit like a fairy tale. A long time ago, just below St. Pankraz in Ulten Valley many small farm houses were situated at the banks of the Falschauer brook. In 1882 the river was flooded and took every single house with it, apart from one. The legendary Häuserl am Stein, in fact, had been built by pure accident on a gigantic rock which only became visible after the floods.
