    Churches & Monasteries
    St. Martin - Kampill Church
    Karneid/Cornedo all'Isarco, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Quite exceptionally and thanks to the cooperation with the Parish of Central Churches in Bolzano, the Touring Club of Italy and the Bolzano Tourism Board, this tiny church opens the doors to the visitors. The late-Romanesque Church of St. Martin in Kampill, consecrated in 1180, boasts prestigious frescos of Bolzano's pictorial art.
During the special openings the loading zone on Via Innsbruck Straße is suspended. Due to the lack of pedestrian crossing, reaching the Church by public transport is recommended.

    Weighing House
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Attractive building from 1634 incorporating an original part of the old City walls, maintained its official function until 1780. Right up in front of it a plaque which commemorates Saint Andrew's Church (demolished in 1785) and in front of it you can admire the picturesque Piazza del Grano Kornplatz (Wheat Square), embellished by nice shops and restaurants, one the main wheat market and of other land produce. In this respect we are talking about the firs main urban centre of Bolzano/Bozen together with the castle of the Prince-Bishops of Trento, founders of the City: the Castle was probably destroyed by Mainhard II during one of his incursions to obtain control over the important commercial town (1277).

    Drugstore
    Thaler Beautiful things
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Back in the day, butchers would throw out whatever parts they
couldn’t use or sell into courtyards – but as the adage goes, somebody’s
trash is another’s treasure, and so chandlers would gleefully
collect those valuable ingredients to make their candles and soaps.
It made sense then for Josef Anton Thaler to open a soap workshop
in 1763 in the very same place where Thaler’s modern premises lie.
He was so successful he later went on to become a supplier of medical
goods to the court and a colonial warehouse and shop for the
local populations: local farmers would come into town to purchase
spices from the Middle East, among other items on display. In 1946,
the Schwienbacher family purchased the store. Hans Schwienbacher
was a far-sighted man who succeeded in creating a booming
business, set up a wholesale operation and then handed control
and oversight to his daughters Heidi and Veronika. The siblings are
still very much involved in running the company. At the turn of the
century, having a niche was seen as that extra special something –
in this case, exclusive perfumes, wellbeing and beauty routines, and
luxury design and furniture for the living areas. In 2012, the family
decided to expand their business and started dipping their toes in
    the beverage and restaurant world.

    Monument to Victory in Bolzano/Bozen
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

"BZ '18–'45: one monument, one city, two dictatorships", is an exhibition opened to the public in July 2014. It illustrates the history of the Monument to Victory, designed by Marcello Piacentini and erected by the Fascist regime between 1926 and 1928. The monument reflects and provides a link to local historical events during the twenty years of Fascism and the Nazi occupation, within the context of national and international events in the years between the two World Wars (1918–1945). The exhibition also covers the radical urban transformations for the construction of a new “Italian” city of Bolzano, from the end of the 1920s. Finally, the exhibition confronts the difficult relationship between the different language groups, caused by the overbearing legacy of Fascism, within the evolving social and political framework of the second half of the twentieth century to the present day.

    Forts & Castles
    Palais Campofranco
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Palais Campofranco was built in the second half of the 18th century. During the following century, it was the residence of the Archduke Ranieri Joseph of Austria and his wife, Princess Elisabeth of Savoy. The emblem of the Palace is its monumental ginko biloba tree, a gift for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, more commonly known as Princess Sissi, from her uncle Heinrich.

A change that preserves both the environment and the past of the building. This is the vision that nurtured the Palais Campofranco’s rebirth, built up from its historical foundations into a tribute to the territory through the creative use of smart technologies and natural energy sources.

The inner court of the Palais, with its impressive ginkgo tree as a centrepiece, is open all year round to give the palace a central role in Bolzano’s city life.

    Thun
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
The success-filled story of one of South Tyrol's best-known companies sounds like a fairy tale. Once upon a time ... about 50 years ago, a married couple decided to turn their dreams into reality.
So began this fairy tale that, far from being over, shows us today a company that produces highly successful ceramic giftware, porcelain tableware and tiled stoves.
    Places to See
    Walthersquare
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Piazza Walther/Waltherpaltz is the central quare of Bolzano. Thanks to its cafés and pretty shops it has become the front parlour of the town and it hosts many traditional events such as the Flower Market and the Christmas market.

It dates back to 1808 when it was named after Maximilian of Bavaria who had decreeded its construction. It then became "Johannesplatz" as a homage to the Archduke Johann of Austria and in 1901 changes ist name yet again to that of Walther von der Vogelweide (one of the most important German poets who lived between 1170 and 1230) and keeps it untile present date, except for a brief period between the two WWs, when it got named afer King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.

    Paints, Wallpapers
    Tiozzo, specialised paperhanger and decorator
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
    History
Tiozzo Severino was born in the province of Padova in 1923. He was
a paperhanger and the grandfather of today’s owner. The young
tradesman moved to Bolzano and in 1946 decided to set up his own
business in Via Genoa. The store specialised in producing wool mattresses.
A niche product if there ever was one. But back in the day
it sold exceptionally well, and was particularly well received by the
Italian immigrants living in the Semirurali worker neighbourhood,
which had been created after World War II. All things change and, in
1959, grandfather Severino moved to Via Torino and stopped selling
mattresses in favour of curtains and wallpapers. In 1985, his sons
Roberto and Silvano joined the family-run business, and his nephew
Mirco took over after his uncle retired in 2006.
    Stand-out traits
The modern store boasts floor-to-ceiling windows which flood
the store with plenty of natural light. This setup also establishes a
direct connection with Bolzano’s industrial estate’s busy roads, as
the store is located opposite the historical Valbruna steelworks and
right next to the innovative NOI techpark. What all the business’
clients have in common is measures scribbled on sheets of paper or the blueprint of their apartment, the key ingredients when purchasing
duvets and kitchen linen, curtains, awnings, and solutions
to provide shade. All these are tailored or adapted to the client’s
specifications in the workshop on the first floor, while the workshop
in the cellar is where the upholstery magic takes place across a sea
    of divans, armchairs, and chairs.

    T. Gasser, haberdashery
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Let’s start at the very beginning with some hard facts. Therese Gasser
was born in Millan, near Bressanone, but at the tender age of 23 took
over the small haberdashery shop in Bolzano from her aunt Zenz Öttl.
Therese worked in the shop most of her life, supported by two apprentices,
sisters Kreszenz and Anna Kaufmann. In 1921, as she didn’t
have children, Therese decided to give her store and, with it, her
surname, to the “Gasser Gals” – her employees. In 1972, Anna’s niece,
Gertraud Sauer, née Kaufmann, took over the business after having
spent part of her married life in Munich and having acquired considerable
experience selling leather clothes. The small shop has been
run by women for the equivalent of four generations and became
Gertraud’s pride and joy – so much so she only stopped going in every
day at the ripe old age of 90! In 2011, her son Wolfgang Sauer stepped
up to oversee the business’ administration while two women still
advise and help clients find what they need in keeping with tradition.
    Shops
    Tobacconist Peter
    Bolzano/Bozen, Bolzano/Bozen and environs
Peter’s father was one of the most important butchers in the city,
whereas his mother followed her own path and opened her own
tobacco store in 1955 – Peter was a 1-year-old baby – in Don Bosco, a
neighbourhood which mostly comprises Italian-speaking Bolzanini.
Idle hands weren’t something the family believed in, so Peter started
helping out at the shop during the school breaks and holidays. It
soon dawned on him, at the start of the 60s upon finishing school,
that he’d be taking over the business.
The shop is a true cave of wonders: every square inch seems to be
bursting with products, and the 60 m² stock whatever you may
    need – and then some. Toys, stationery, cards for every occasion;
however, the pride and joy of the venue is its tobacco, especially pipes and all the relevant tools, and a wealth of different tobacco.
Oh, and don’t forget to try your luck and buy a scratch card or play
your lucky numbers at the lottery.
