    Hochmuth Viewing Platform

This references the historically arduous life working the land on the steep slopes of the Muthof farms, where, with the help of winches, baskets of earth and manure were pulled up to the fields so that they could be cultivated again.
The viewing platform provides a breathtaking panoramic view of Merano and the Etsch Valley as well as the surrounding mountains. The platform is equipped with two telescopes and provides information on the mountains that can be seen from the Hochmuth, as well as on the cultivation of the steep fields of the Muthof farms in days gone by.

    Forts & Castles
    Tyrol Castle
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Tyrol Castle is the most historically significant castle in South Tyrol. Its origins stretch back into the late 11th century.

Since 2003 Tyrol Castle has housed the South Tyrolean Museum of History. Its main focus is the history of the province from its beginnings to modern times.

The oldest structural elements can be found in church excavations in the outer bailey (three building phases, three-apse chamber from the 9th century). The south palace contains the two Romanesque portals. The two-storey castle chapel is dedicated to St. Pancras and is famous for its gothic frescoes. What is believed to be the wedding chamber of Countess Margarethe of Tyrol, known as Maultasch (literally “bag mouth”), is situated in the Mushaus. The keep, which was only completed after 1902, now houses an exhibition of the history of the 20th century depicted over twenty separate levels. The historic estate buildings house special exhibitions.

    Churches & Monasteries
St. John the Baptist Parish Church
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Documents mentioning St. John the Baptist Parish Church date back to 1164, although it existed long before (probably as a baptistery for the region), so it has already reached a venerable age. The Parish Church of Dorf Tirol/Tirolo is considered to be the oldest missionary church dedicated to St. John the Baptist in the area. The original Romanesque church (its tower is still preserved today) was eventually extended to include a Late Gothic choir.
One of the most interesting features of the church is the baptismal font of white Laas marble. The organ, with its large number of antique wooden and metal pipes is also a remarkable masterpiece from an artistic and historical point of view. The neo-Gothic high altar, bishop’s figures, statue of St. John above the baptismal font, oil paintings and crucifixion group are other works of art that are well worth seeing.
Among other things, Secco paintings from the year 1480 were brought to light by the renovation work on the Parish Church in 1969/70.

    Tyrol Castle
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Tyrol Castle, the long-neglected seat of the Counts of Tyrol, gave the province of South Tyrol its name. In 2003 this historical symbol was finally converted into a province museum. The existing castle was thus secured, and its structure clearly highlighted. Excavations in front of the castle yielded Romanesque building components, which were added to the exhibition circuit in a separate building. In addition to specific interventions in the interior spaces, the contemporary structural elements made of Corten steel and glass are visible, especially in the outer bailey and castle keep, which deals with the history of the twentieth century. The existing and the insertions were clearly separated one from the other. Alongside its architecture, the artistic insertions play a predominant role in reflecting the new spirit of the historical building.

    The Spronser Lakes
    Partschins/Parcines, Meran/Merano and environs

The ten Spronser lakes, the largest collection of lakes in the high alpine region, can be found to the north west of Tirolo, at the heart of the Texel group of mountains at around 2,500 metres above sea level. These enchanting mountain lakes form one of the most beautiful and significant groups of lakes in South Tyrol, with the Langsee lake, at 1 km long and almost 300 metres wide, also being one of the largest in the country.

The most beautiful group of mountain lakes in South Tyrol is so high that even in summer there is often snow on their shores. The Spronser lakes supply a large part of the city of Merano and its surroundings with water. The flora and fauna at this altitude are also noteworthy and absolutely fascinating.

    Churches & Monasteries
    St. Peter's Parish Church
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

Popular wisdom says that the church square, which offers many beautiful views, was once home to one of the oldest baptisteries in the area. Today, the Parish Church stands on an even older site dating back to the pre-romanesque period (lombard-carolingian style) and is one of the rare examples of a cross-domed church with central nave and side naves.

In 1287 Count Meinhard II of Tyrol transferred the patronage to the Cistercian monastery of Stams in the Oberinntal valley. St. Peter is still under the pastoral care of the monastery today. Under Meinhard, the lombard-carolingian church underwent a thorough reconfiguration; further modifications were made in the Gothic period. The church is rich in precious Romanesque and Gothic frescoes. The southern side nave has an especially well-preserved half-length portrait of St. Paul dating back to the 11th century.

    Reiterer Ulrich - Mountain Guide
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

Even in his youth, Ulrich Reiterer had a great passion for the mountains. Initially his interest lay in the Alps, where he conquered the highest and most difficult faces (the east face of Monte Rosa, the north face of the Eiger and the east face of the Watzmann). Later he also became interested in the high mountains in the South American Andes (Nevado Alpamayo, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi), and Nepal (Pumo-Ri 7,165 m, Ama Dablam 6,856 m). He undertakes many climbs in the Dolomites, dedicating his time to ice climbing on the frozen waterfalls in winter, whilst enjoying numerous ski tours and traverses in spring. Since 2009 he has turned his passion into a career and - in summer only - is a part time mountain guide.

    Churches & Monasteries
    St. Rupert’s Church
    Tirol/Tirolo, Meran/Merano and environs

The church, mentioned as far back as 1332, with its flat ceiling was increased in height in the late Gothic period and lengthened by the chancel with ribbed vaults above short round pillars and pointed corbels. The church was rededicated in 1472. The small tower that was built from hewn stone at the same time as the chancel remained incomplete and was later finished in brick.

In 1900 the church was extensively renovated. There is a large painting on the façade at the top of which the earlier, lower gable can be seen. In addition there is a broad border with small bust portraits in quatrefoils. On the southern side is the sundial which bears the date 1537. Inside there are traces of gilded frescoes from the early 15th century. The winged shrine with ancient sculptures is of the Schnatterpeck school.

St. Rupert’s Church was most recently renovated in 2007/08, and the altar dedication took place on 21st September 2008.
