    Circular Hike: Kalterer See Lake
Kaltern an der Weinstraße/Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino, The South Tyrolean Wine Road

Route: from the car park at Kalterer See lake, continue north to the Geier restaurant. Behind the restaurant, a narrow trail leads to the north into the orchards. Walk along these and turn off to the right in an easterly direction following the markers. At the slope on the eastern side of the valley, turn right, passing by the hotel on the left to the Klughammer road. First follow this road, then continue on a trail above the road.

This trail ends at the southern end of the lake. Cross the road to join the Nature Discovery Trail (Naturerlebnisweg). At the end of this nature trail, turn right onto the so-called Kuchlweg trail, hiking to the vineyards on the western side of the valley. Just before the wine road, turn right into the trail through the field, following it until you reach the point where the wine road curves to the right. Cross over and now follow a trail through the field once more. Then follow the footpath next to the wine road to the church of San Giuseppe al Lago/St. Josef am See (Kirche St. Josef). Take the farm track to the right back to the starting point of the hike.

Wine and Water Walk (Spazierweg Wein und Wasser) in Rasa/Raas
    Natz-Schabs/Naz-Sciaves, Brixen/Bressanone and environs

The Wine and Water Walk, which is actually a short hike, passes through an ancient cultural landscape of attractive terraced vineyards, and past centuries-old farmsteads to Neustift Monastery (Kloster Neustift) and the Vahrner See lake. The monastery is not only a collection of extremely beautiful buildings, but also has an excellent wine cellar, while the small lake has for decades been a protected habitat for fauna and flora.{MQ}From Rasa, the hike goes along trail no. 4 down through the vineyards, past the Strasserhof farm and on to Neustift Monastery (refreshments available). Be sure not to miss a tour of the monastery, while a visit to the church - and its magnificent Rococo decoration - is a truly memorable experience.{MQ}Cross the valley floor on trail no. 9 until you come to the village of Varna/Vahrn (refreshments available) on the other side. Here you walk a short way alongside the babbling Schalderer Bach stream until you come to the Kneipp pool – a great opportunity to cool down your hot feet – before continuing on the Chestnut Trail (Keschtnweg no. 1) along an easy forest road to the Vahrner See lake (refreshments available). After completing a circuit of the lake you return towards Varna on trail no. 1. Go under the motorway and continue on trail no. 1 down to the Eisack river. After the bridge, go left for about 100 m and then turn right onto the Törggelesteig trail no. 8A. Follow this up towards Rasa, then just before the village take trail no. 7 past the Steinraffler restaurant (refreshments available) and finally turn onto trail no. 4 back to your starting point.{MQ}As the name of the Wine and Water Walk suggests, there are ample opportunities for refreshment along the way. The fresh, aromatic Valle Isarco/Eisacktal valley white wines are highly recommended - definitely worth a trying a glass if you stop by.

Paths along the irrigation channels in Merano
    Partschins/Parcines, Meran/Merano and environs

The Merano irrigation channels trails (Waalwege) represent a union of eleven trails around Meran/Merano in South Tyrol. Waalwege trails are narrow walking paths that run along historic water canals. These channels were once used to irrigate the fields and date back to the 13th century.

Vines, apple trees, pines, cypresses, firs and larches line these special Waalwege canal trails, which in South Tyrol can only be found around Meran and in the Vinschgau valley. Castles, palaces and chapels along the way offer insights into the culture of the region. Meanwhile, traditional inns invite you to take a break.

The circular tour on the Merano Canal Trails is approx. 80 km long, going round the entire Meran basin. Remaining at nearly the same elevation throughout, the circular tour runs along the Etschtal valley’s mountains. This makes the entire route and also the individual stages ideal for leisure hikers and families.

The Merano Canal Trail can be hiked all year round and connects eleven irrigation canals (Waalwege) with one another: the Algunder Waalweg, the Kuenser Waalweg, the Waalweg Riffian, the Maiser Waalweg, the Schenner Waalweg, the Brandiswaalweg in Lana, the Tschermser Waalweg, the Marlinger Waalweg, the Partschinser Waalweg, the Rablander Waalweg and the Wallburgweg in Naturns/Naturno.

Amidst striking hillside pastures at a height of 2,000 m on the Tschögglberg mountain above Mölten, the natural environment is so untouched that those hiking here might feel as if time has stood still. The “Stoanerne Mandln” is a place shrouded in myth where shepherds have stacked stones into cairns since prehistoric times. In the field of the “Stoanerne Mandln”, the meeting place of witches and priests, one can still sense the unique but hard to describe atmosphere, and there are fantastic views of the entire Dolomite range as far as the Marmolata and the King Ortler peaks

The Waterfall Trail (Wasserfallweg) first goes to the lower falls and then to the upper falls. Then you follow trail no. 34 and 27 to the Briol inn (refreshments available). Continue to Tre Chiese (refreshments available) on trail no. 4. The route back to Barbiano takes you first along trail no. 6, which then branches off into trail no. 3. Follow the Dorfstraße road to where you started.

It goes without saying that the highlight of this hike is the spectacular Barbiano waterfalls, which plunge in several cascades over a total drop of 200 m. But there are also other interesting things to see along the way, such as the leaning tower of the church in Barbiano.

Anyone with an interest in architecture will love the Briol inn, which is an amazing example of Bauhaus style right in the heart of the Alps. The artist Hubert Lanzinger transformed a former refuge here into a complete work of art in which you can stay and dine.

We must also mention Tre Chiese, a fascinating collection of buildings constructed on the site of an ancient sacred spring.
