Walking route to the mountain village of Prenn
    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

Just an easy, relatively flat walk away from the Verdins-Talle cable car mountain station lies the mountain village of Prenn. With its idyllic little church and an amazing view over the Val Passiria, Prenn is well worth a visit. The area is particularly suitable for those who like shorter hiking trails and our younger guests. Prenn also has numerous opportunities for that well-deserved pit stop so you can keep your body rested and refuelled.

    Gilf Promenade
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

This trail runs along both banks from the Gilf Gorge down to the point where the river enters the city. On the right bank, it connects directly with the path that leads to the Powder Tower and the Tappeiner Promenade; on the left, it joins with the Summer Promenade. Gilf Promenade is particularly intriguing for its subtropical vegetation. Its Walk of Poets also makes it the most romantic of Merano’s promenades: modern and contemporary love poetry is engraved onto a series of benches here.

The Partschinser waterfall is one of the most impressive in the Alps. Its masses of water shoot far out over a freestanding rock face and then plunge thunderously into the depths like a cloudburst! The height of the fall is 97 m. The waterfall is most powerful at the time of snowmelt (May to June) or after heavy rainfall (water flow 4,000 to 10,000 litres per second).

Teufelsteinweg Trail in St. Martin/S. Martino
St.Martin in Passeier/San Martino in Passiria, Meran/Merano and environs
From the info office St. Martin in the direction of the village center to the savings bank. Turn left there and walk out of the village to the fire station. Ascend the Feldbauernweg to the right until you reach the last houses. There you will find the entrance to the Teufelsteinweg. From here follow the signs. At the end of the theme trail, descend the asphalt road for a few hundred meters and then hike back to the right along trail no. 4 through the forest to St. Martin. It gets its name from the Devil's Stone, which stands in the middle of the path. A boulder with the hoof print of the devil.

In winter you may encounter icy or snow-covered spots.

With its 800-year history, a unique landscape and gastronomic delights, the Schneeberg remains a highly-frequented tourist destination. In fact, the "Schneeberg" doesn't refer to a "mountain" as such – but rather to the whole mining complex. To the locals in the Passeiertal Valley, "Schneeberg" mainly refers to St. Martin/S. Martino's mining village that includes a mountain refuge with a restaurant and the Adventure mine; now a tourist attraction.

Circular hike along the Merano High Mountain Trail
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

The Merano High Mountain Trail, considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the entire Alpine region, is an approx. 100-km circular hike. It can be circumnavigated in both directions in five to eight daily stages.

The Merano High Mountain Trail is divided into a northern and a southern part. Extending along route 24 at a relatively constant altitude, the trail surrounds the Texelgruppe Nature Park. The northern part features the high mountain climate typical of the Texelgruppe range while the southern part boasts a sub-Mediterranean climate with characteristically lush flora. In particular, the southern part features fantastic views of the city of Meran and the Etschtal and Vinschgau valleys.

The lowest point of the trail is 839 m elevation while the highest section extends to nearly 3,000 m. Hikers along this route can ascend and descend to and from the Etschtal, Passeiertal and Schnalstal valleys. Additionally, there are numerous overnight accommodation options along the trail that make it possible to hike only individual stages or to tailor the route to personal preferences. The trail demands both sure-footedness and alpine experience and the exposed areas are always secured with chains or ropes.

Possible start and finish points: Katharinaberg, Unterstell, Hochmuth, Ulfas, Vellau, Giggelberg, Pfossental, Christl, Matatz

    Duration: 5-8 days

    Sissi's Path
    Meran/Merano, Meran/Merano and environs

This scenic route, known as the Sentiero di Sissi in Italian and the Sissiweg in German, leads to the areas of town most beloved by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sissi. The charming Habsburg sovereign stayed in Merano several times in the second half of the nineteenth century, and was enchanted by its charm. This path dedicated to her connects the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle with the city centre; it passes through eleven stages along the way, each with a story to tell. From the castle that majestically dominates the botanical gardens, Sissi’s Path winds its way past Pienzenau and Rubein Castles, the Reichenbach Residence, Piazza Fontana (Brunnenplatz), Rottenstein Castle, and the Bavaria Hotel; it then continues down to the river, crosses the Roman Bridge, skirts the Wandelhalle and finally pays homage to the empress in the park dedicated to her. The park is on the edge of the Summer Promenade and there is a statue erected in Sissi’s honour. Obviously, the trail can be followed in either direction.

    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

The castle of the Noblemen of Senales once stood where the parish church of Monte Santa Caterina/Katharinaberg now stands with its tower reaching for the heavens was once. However, the Carthusians had it destroyed in 1350. In earlier times, there was a proto-historic human settlement here. A Bronze Age sickle element with silica and Iron Age ceramic artefacts are proof that this area has been used for thousands of years. It would appear that a pre-historic trail ran along here coming up from Vinschgau.

    Trail of Legends
    Schenna/Scena, Meran/Merano and environs

A wooded area on the meadow track between Thurnerhof and Schenna Castle is home to scarily super legendary figures from Schenna. Kids’ imaginations will really run riot on this cross-country walk where they’ll encounter the carved figures. Mellow light suffuses the mixed woodland with chestnut trees, branches crack and rustling sounds emanate from the undergrowth... if you follow the path from Thurnerhof, where a hollow, ancient Keschtbam (South Tyrolean for chestnut tree) makes you want to play hide and seek, then that is the start of your mythical adventure. Perhaps timid forest fairies live here, or even a mischievous Nörggele. Stefan Kröll created the sculptures and - everyone who hears this is amazed - he did it with a chainsaw. All winter long he worked on the figures for his final high school graduation project at Fürstenburg Agriculture and Forestry Technical College in Burgeis, releasing giants and devils, Nörggele and a small church from pine wood. He selected six legends from the Schenna almanac, including “St. Oswald below the Ifinger”, “the Thaller Nörggele”, and “the Devil carries off a Perjuror”. The stories are told in German, Italian and English on the appealingly designed display boards. Admittedly some of the tales are rather spooky and macabre, and their content is more suitable for older children, but the figures are a delight for children of all ages, who can see what they want in them and even make up their own stories.

Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau - Mouontain pasture Mastaun
    Schnals/Senales, Meran/Merano and environs

The mountain pasture Mastaun (open from the beginning of May to the end of October) is in the eponymous high mountain valley that branches off near Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau west of the Schnalstal Valley and extends up to a crown of 3000 m-peaks. A stream of crystal-clear water runs through the valley. The farmstead Mastaunhof, to which the mountain pasture belongs, was recorded in documents as early as 1356 and is one of the largest farms in the Schnalstal Valley. The pastures surrounding the mountain passture are unusually well-tended and simply magnificent. There are indications that many centuries ago the mountain pasture Mastaun was already in operation all year round.

At a relatively consistent altitude, this trail connects, to an extent, the high mountain climate of the Texel Group and the sub-Mediterranean climate of the Etschtal Valley. The hike through the various segments gives us a good insight into the world of the mountain farmers who worked to create and maintain this mountain and cultural landscape over the centuries.

The looped trail around the lake is well worth the effort because a pastoral pathway runs directly along the waterfront and is, of course, particularly beautiful from about mid-July when the reservoir is full. In the winter, water is released from the reservoir to generate electricity and, depending on the water level, the tower of the immersed church may be visible. There are some photos on display in the chapel in Vernagt of the flooded plain and farms.
