    Convent Maria Steinach
    Algund/Lagundo, Meran/Merano and environs

Not far from the San Giuseppe (St. Joseph) Parish Church in Riomolino (Mühlbach) is the early Gothic church of St. Mary and the adjacent Maria Steinach Convent. These were built in 1241 by Countess Adelaide, the daughter of Alberto, Count of Tyrol. Legend has it that two doves appeared to show where the Countess should build the convent. During the reign of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, the convent was closed. It was re-opened in 1848 by the Dominican Nun´s Order of Linz.

    The Marlengo Apple Crown
    Marling/Marlengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The Grape Festival is staged in Merano/Meran every year, on the third weekend in October. Open-air concerts and the large procession with a number of decorated floats are the highlight of the traditional “Autumn in Merano” events program. But this year the large procession and the concerts take not place.

Of all the eye-catching floats on parade, the Apple Crown float from Marlengo/Marling tops them all. Made up of over half a ton of apples and 700 dianthus flowers, the Apple Crown float goes back as far as the Grape Festival in 1949 and still remains an integral part of the procession today. Even at the end of the Festival, the Apple Crown is kept on show for a few weeks at the Marlengo town square.

During the procession the float is drawn by four magnificent horses, of the local Haflinger breed. The Apple Crown float contains baskets filled with “Jonagold“ apples, which are handed out to enthusiastic spectators cheering the procession. The float also carries a number of children while six couples in traditional local costumes walk alongside, three on one side and the other three on the other. Each couple carries baskets brimming with typical autumn fare, such as apples, grapes and chestnuts.

    Maria Rast Chapel
Eppan an der Weinstaße/Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, Alto Adige Wine Road

Maria Rast Chapel: the church can be found just outside the village, on the path of the same name. History: this is the first historical church building in the area. In 1874 Josef Vonstadl, the diocese architect designed the building, and it was built shortly after. The neo romantic style is clearly visible, the bell wall, cross vaulting, arched windows and much more. In the yard, if you look carefully, you will the mosaic Stations of the Cross made by the local artist Robert Scherer. Architectural style: this small church is a well-loved place of pilgrimage, even today. Marriages also take place here. Walking: a walk around this area is well worth it as it is not too strenuous. On longer walks from Girlan to St Michael, you can stop at this delightful little church.

    Church St. Katharina
Graun im Vinschgau/Curon Venosta, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The old parish church and the village of Graun were sacrificed for the sea stagnation in 1950. The new village was rebuilt in the fields of Margrond, and the church was much smaller in size than the new houses in Graun, planned by architect Erich Pattis from Bolzano.
The church is a simple hall construction with a wooden ceiling. In the back of the church, in the simple sanctuary, is the organ, in the foreground the apse with the image of Catherine of Alexandria on the side to which this church is also dedicated. The main picture, however, shows the Assumption of Mary into heaven, since in the year of the consecration of the Church, the Pope had proclaimed a Marian year.
The present parish church of Graun (foundation stone laying May 29, 1950, completion on 02.12.1951, consecration on May 18, 1954 by Bishop Josef Gargitter) was built together with the new village, but is much smaller than the old parish church.

    Church Santa Maria
    Ritten/Renon, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

The modest little church in Maria Saal was built in the mid-1600s and then was expanded in 1719. According to a local legend the miraculous image above the altar had originally hung in a sheep barn. Due to an ever-growing number of pilgrims then finally a church was built. Like many other churches, this one too was closed down under the reign of Joseph II. In 1847, it was re-inaugurated by prince bishop Johannes Tschiderer who celebrated his first mass in Collalbo on August 3rd 1800. Tschiderer was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1996.

The rather particular motive, a fresco of the Madonna with an umbrella, in the round arch between presbytery and nave has contributed to this pilgrimage church’s popularity. The fresco was painted by Alexander Dejaco as an expression of gratitude for his unscathed return from World War I, leaning on the prayer “Under thy shield and protection we seek refuge, o holy mother of God”. This painting also takes on a special meaning as the Renon mountain is a rather arid area, thus its farmers would pray to the Holy Mother for rain in times of great draughts and water scarceness.

    High mountain road of Marlengo
    Marling/Marlengo, Meran/Merano and environs

The Marlengo high mountain road leads you from one farmhouse to the next. After the second turn from the Bergerstrasse, you will pass the Inner-Holzmair, later on the Ausser-Holzmair and finally the Senn am Egg, which is still run as a pub today. The impressions you have while walking along the Marlengo high mountain road come partly from these farmhouses, but also from the mixed forest, some orchards, meadows, majestic chestnut trees, as well as from the wide view across the burgrave's office and its surrounding mountains and slopes. Description: From Marlengo (363 metres), you will follow road number 33, which will lead you first of all along the Bergerstrasse in a south-westerly direction passing the Gasthaus Waalheim. From here you walk up to the sharp bend just above the Halbweg. From here, turn right and walk along the Marlengo high mountain road (well marked, cannot be missed), which leads you slightly up and down through meadows and forests, as well as along the above named farmhouses (highest part of the road = approx. 780 metres). Walk in a northerly direction until you come to the Senn am Egg (698 metres), where the high mountain road will end. Then follow mark number 35 and descend to Marlengo. However, it is far more rewarding to follow the marked forest path via the Josefsberg in the direction of Forst, then descend to the Marlin irrigation channel road and follow this road through forests and orchards to the lovely St. Felix chapel (which is unfortunately situated below a power line). Walk in a southerly direction to the Waldschenke and from there descend to Marlengo.

Difference in altitude: approx. 420 metres Total walking time: approx. 4 to 5 hours

Special art - “The art of living and the art of loving” is the very original title of one of the latest books by Partschins/Parcines artist, Matthias Schönweger and, one of his particular mottos is: “Trees are the stuff books are made of”.
Schönweger, writer and collector, is also the owner of 50 imposing wartime bunkers which date back to World War II and are scattered throughout South Tyrol from the Brenner/Brennero Pass southwards.
One of his bunkers can be seen right here in Töll/Tel! These empty fortresses were places of safety and protection during wartime and can tell us much about recent historic events. Schönweger uses these dark, atmospheric constructions to host exhibitions and other cultural events on significant, meaningful themes.

The Neo-Gothic church in Pedross was built from 1908 to 1912 according to the plans of the brothers Paul and Theodor Huter from Innsbruck under the curate Franz Habicher and inaugurated on 28 October 1912 by the Brixen prince-bishop Franz Egger. Patron Saint is the St. Martin, pictured in the large window behind the high altar. The church is painted yellow. It has an open porch and a rose window above the entrance to the west. The interior of the church is decorated with a barrel-shaped ribbed vault. The church has 10 large windows, all of which were donated by private individuals. The church has three altars designed, carved and painted by Josef Bachlechner. The pulpit, designed by Josef Bachlechner and made by J. Peitner from Wilten, shows Christ as sower and the four evangelists. The Stations of the Cross is a relief in wood, executed by the sculptor Franz Kobald from Schwaz. The left side altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the right to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The central theme of the neo-Gothic winged altar in the presbytery is the Holy Trinity. The outer sides of the wings show the victim of Melchizedek on the left and the sacrifice of Abraham on the right. Inside the altar shrine the saints Wolfgang and Wendelin are depicted. Wendelin is the patron saint of shepherds and peasants and was much revered in Langtaufers. The chapel in the nearby "Ochsenberg" is also consacrated the St Wendelin. Under the windows of the presbytery the seven sacraments of angels are represented in round medallions. On the ceiling of the whole church various herbs, flowers and medicinal plants are depicted.
