The Corno del Renon: The most beautiful viewpoint mountain of the Dolomites, UNESCO’s world natural heritage. At the beginning of the 20th century the famous mountaineer, Ludwig Purtscheller, enthused: “Whoever wants to take in Tyrol with one glance should climb these mountains.” He was right for on clear days visitors have an unbelievably beautiful panoramic view: from the giant glaciers of the Ortles and the Ötztaler Alps in the west to the legendary world of the Dolomites far in the east; from the Stubaier and Zillertal Alps in the north to the Presenella, to the Adamello and the Brenta Dolomites in the south. The Corno del Renon makes for an ideal excursion at any time of the year. Here you can go for a gentle walk or on more demanding and challenging hikes. The Corno del Renon is ideal for Family skiing in winter. A modern cable car makes the ascent easier. The peak is just about an hour away and nearly 200 metres in altitude difference from the mountain station of the Cima Lago Nero.

    Castle ruin of Montechiaro
Prad am Stilfser Joch/Prato allo Stelvio, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The ruins of Lichtenberg Castle are perched high above the town of Montechiaro/Lichtenberg near Prato/Prad at the Passo dello Stelvio/ Stilfserjoch Pass. The castle has a rich history of Minnesang, a courtly tradition of lyric and song that was popular in the Middle Ages.

The Count of Tyrol held the enlarged castle up until 1513; the Counts of Khuen-Belasi subsequently took it over, and still own it today. The castle’s tradition of minstrelsy is still visible in the fragments and traces of once-sumptuous fresco decoration leftover from the heyday of the courts. Most of the fresco cycle was removed in 1912, and was transferred to the Ferdinandeum Museum in Innsbruck.

    The Sesto sundial
    Sexten/Sesto, Dolomites Region 3 Zinnen

It is one of the most striking skylines created by nature – the unique Sesto Sun Dial mountains. The Dolomite peaks number Nine, Ten (Croda Rossa di Sesto), Eleven, Twelve and One tower high above Sesto and jointly form the imposing stone clockwork. The position of the sun above these peaks can be used to determine the time on clear winter days. And: The Sesto Sun Dial also offers continuous new incentive and stimulation to challenge new records and to go beyond one’s personal limits – or even beyond the limits of the imaginable. The people of Sesto are really creative in this context! Greti Rogger, the innkeeper at the Pian di Cengia hut, and her son Daniel have managed to climb all five peaks of the Sun Dial on a single day. It is hard to imagine a more intense race against time! Insider hint: The best place and time to watch the sun above the Sesto Sun Dial is the main road between Moso and the Congress Hall “Haus Sexten” – in winter! This is when the sun dial will match the time of day rather well.
